    Gear case

What brand, year and HP motor? SEI may make a brand new gearcase, for the price of replacing those gears, bearings and dog.

how do i test tilt and trim motor on a volvo penta 4.3 gl sx with blue and green wires and no black earth thanks

2 wire PTT motors use relays, not solenoids. Solenoids provide power when energized, and are open when not energized. Relays provide power when energized and provide ground, when not energized.

    Battery charger size needed

Gee, this is like an oil debate. I like the slow chargers for boat batteries. Slow is best, as my pappy taught me. The motor charging system keeps 'em charged when I use the boat. When I am a slacker, and don't use the boat, I slap a 3A charge on it for 24 hours, or 48 hours for a dual...

    Water in the intake

So freshwater cools the manifolds and raw water cools the risers? Is raw water salty? Probably the manifold is still good, if freshwater use. I would look at the risers, especially the joint between them. If any water goes past the gaskets on the manifold to riser joint, it can end up in...

1976 mercury 1150 115hp runs on muffs but not in lake

if you can find enough wire to connect to, I would recommend you remove the plastic insulation from a crimp type butt splice, coat the wires and splice with flux and crimp and solder the splice. Next some shrink tube over the splice.

1976 mercury 1150 115hp runs on muffs but not in lake

If you can find a way to solder a new wire on, that is the way. Replacements for the trigger and distributor body used to be avail for $200+. They were a drag to install, as you needed to pull the rotor shaft. See if CDI Electronics still sells them.

    Battery charger size needed

Two batteries? Figure on 5A each, for slow charging, which is the best kind. A 10A charger will normally taper the amperage as the batteries charge up, so you will not overcharge them. You can also get a smaller charger, if you can leave them on charge for a day or two.

1976 mercury 1150 115hp runs on muffs but not in lake

Clearly it is time to check the timing. Remove the spark plugs and prop. Set the throttle to a position where the carbs are closed but ready to open. Crank motor with timing light on #1 cylinder. Timing s/b 4-6* BTDC. Carbs s/b open 1-1/2 turns.

No power from the top 2 cylinders

Check your wiring. Check the trigger part number. A 6 cylinder would fire a cylinder at 180*, but your motor should not fire then.

    Thru hull leak

Fixing it from the outside would require that you can mimic the original mold for the hull, with it's smooth glass shape and strength from long glass fibers. Not an easy task. Rip the inside out....

Question about control cable and water separator for carbureted engine

Proper water separators will not restrict fuel flow. They are rated at 20GPH and 40GPH. Your motor is at most 15GPH, and most of the time less. Do not let them get full of water, or water will find it's way to the engine. Ideally the control cables are 2' longer than the distance from...

No power from the top 2 cylinders

The outer flywheel can be put on the wrong way. That means the magnets may be in the wrong position to produce spark. Loosen the 8 bolts and rotate the outer flywheel 180* and recheck with timing light.

    Carburetor's

Gee, a site like Crowleymarine will give you a part number. You may need your serial number to get the right part number. Sierra or other aftermarket sources should be able to sell you something to replace your current stator. Some of those stators were lousy, so Merc made replacements. I...

Question about control cable and water separator for carbureted engine

A water separator is a real good idea. If installed properly, a water separator will not cause priming issues. You likely have an air leak in your fuel line, or some other issue. I do not understand your No. 2 question. Normally you would be talking about throttle and shift cables. We do...

How would you seal these screw holes?

Why not drill some pilot holes thru the panel into the deck? Now pull the panel and fill the pilot holes in the deck with silicone. Now install the panel, coat the screws in silicone and install them.

If fuel is left in those engines, the carbs can gum up pretty quickly.

Gee, they last 15 years here on the Jersey shore. They are in full sun during the summer.

snapped driveshaft Mercury 2011 150 Optimax

I have heard of Johnnyrude V4 engines snapping their driveshafts, but never a Merc. Hopefully there is some underlying misalignment of the driveshaft or bearing issue. If not, I consider the design of the DS to be poor engineering, if the OP's boat/motor combo would snap a driveshaft. They...

Motor stalls when shifting into gear

A lot of those V6 motors have a shift interrupt switch. It should be located on the shift cable connection to the engine. You might see if it works, as it kills spark to 1/2 the motor when shifting. If it sticks, the engine can easily stall.

    Upper shift cable?

MerCruisers have upper and lower shift cables. They meet at the motor, next to the carb or intake throttle body. There is a shift interrupt switch there as well. A service manual will show the configuration. As for the control, the throttle only button disconnects the shift cable from the...
