    I would guess someone else was backing the trailer down the ramp and the op was in the boat, started the motor once the lower unit was under water

    without good compression in #2, it will not light off and burn as it should n the cylinder. So it dumps fuel and air into the exhaust where it mixes with the hot burning exhaust of the other cylinders and finally burns. causing the noise you were hearing

    might explain better why you were running the motor when backing into the river. was the boat still on the trailer at an angle? and was it back at the same angle when trying to load it back up? if so maybe you have water in the tank and it is picked up with boat at an angle
