    the diagram is for a smaller motor like the JW's for your 6hp just put your throttle handle to the START position then line up the cam roller and cam markings has describded for the JW

    why would a presumed «"crack" in a tank cause air to be sucked in the carbs ? Fuel tanks need air to break the negative pressure build, up hence the need for "vents" to replenish the "air space" of missing fuel pulled up by the pump. pumping the fuel bulb hard to fill the carbs...

    did you measure the white wire ohms resistance with the frame... if it is connected properly (0 ohms) don'T worry where it goes....

    qwick test ... have a buddy hold the key on START while you wiggle twist prod the cabling if you gat a reaction on the selenoid/starter you may have a bad connection , bad wire etc... and if you have a volt meter check the selenoid control post for 12v wiggle the neutral switch...

    probably major surgery but..... just get it working and run a good decarb product and retest the compression to see what happens. Then decide on the next step.

    loosen it up big time and see if you can wash out what is likely old dried grease with kerosene or wd-40 . if you y have a zerk (?) push out the old grease with the new set the screw to your liking after
