    1959 johnson 50 super seahorse

Racer, I had two Fattys. Both had rounded off shift dogs. With careful adjustment I could get a solid forward or reverse, but not both, due to wear on the shift linkage, dog and gears. I chose forward gear, and learned to get by without reverse.

    Mercury 90hp 1990 Leak

Under the waterpump base is the driveshaft bearing. I do not think there are any seals to replace, once the pump base is out. Depending on the year of the gearcase, the driveshaft bearing has a taper. This taper faces either up or down to provide the correct clearance. They are hard for...

    Trim stuck in up position

Make sure the manual tilt lock isn't jamming the transom bracket. They can rust and just get in the way. I think I remember my '77 Merc doing that. I think running it up some more, and then quickly down was the workaround. I doubt the inner seals are the issue. You do not want to open up...

    1959 johnson 50 super seahorse

Those motors run very well and are very powerful at low RPM, due to the 70CU Inch displacement. They do not rev up very high, but you should see about 27MPH max speed. Their fuel recirculation system consists of dumping any fuel buildup in the intake manifold, overboard. With a bad/mis-tuned...

Shocks AND leaf springs on my trailer??

I have seen one other trailer with shocks. It had coil springs. It was from the 80's or earlier. Shocks and leaf springs were very common on American cars up to the 80s'. Earlier cars had them front and rear. Just about rear wheel drive product had them in the rear, until rear wheel...

    Mercury 90hp 1990 Leak

The driveshaft oil seal is installed in the waterpump base. It is generally easier to replace the pump base, rather than changing the seal. Make sure to use the correct O ring and base gasket, as well as the correct gaskets on both sides of the wearplate.

    Forward and reverse help!

A lot of Merc gearcase propshafts ratchet CW, not turning the driveshaft when in forward gear. Turning them CCW will turn the driveshaft, but can be hard to turn, because of the waterpump impeller doesn't like to spin backwards. The propshaft will turn the driveshaft both ways when in reverse...

    1967 johnson 33hp steering parts

I will assume that your motor has the solid tilt rod, vs the hollow tilt tube. Go on a steering gear manufacturer like seastar and they should have the parts you need. You might get sticker shock. Used parts may be available

    Interior floor options?

Gel coat will be fine under the carpet or exposed as the finished deck. it is hard to get a good finish with gel coat unless you spray it. An Imron or Awlgrip 2 part polyurethane paint may not peel under carpet, but I am not sure how it would be as a deck paint. It would probably be good...

    Sewing Machines

I bought a Janome HD-3000 sewing machine recently. It will sew 6 layers of marine vinyl, and was $400 or so. Much better price than the professional machines, which are $1500 or more. I only do my own work, so the cheaper machine was fine. My grandmothers 1942 Singer factory machine was a...

    Sealing wood for motor mounts.

For a fiberglass boat, I would recommend dry pressure treated solid dimensional lumber, versus plywood. Cut to shape, fiberglass to the hull and then coat with resin.

    Trim gauge off?

Also, look for corrosion on the rheostat that s the trim sender. The copper can make bad contact giving an incorrect reading. BTW- it is best to trim the drive by sound and feel. It is easier and more accurate than a gauge.

    Fuel pump problem

Gee, one would think checking the fuses would proceed changing the starter.

    Boat Radio/Stereo Help

Some stereos will not work at all with the yellow wire disconnected. The fix is to connect the red and yellow wires to the switched battery power.

    Fuel pump problem

You mean Optimax, right? On those Optimax's, he pump only runs for a few seconds normally, so that is probably not your problem. Does the starter crank the motor? If not the neutral safety switch may be bad, or the control may not be in neutral. Hold the key in the crank position and wiggle...

    Interior floor options?

Carpet is not waterproof. Water will get under it or go thru it, depending on which kind you get. If you plan to have snap in carpet, and leave it in most of the time, get a porous backing so it will dry out between uses. Snap in carpet is pretty convenient. Marine vinyl is waterproof and...

    Boat Radio/Stereo Help

Db, there are auto bilge pumps that do not have float switches. They work quite well. Rain does sink boats. Ask any marina owner. So do you want a sunken boat with fully charged batteries, or a floating boat with discharged batteries? If a 1" or greater hole is punctured thru the hull...

1986 Mercury 115 tilt trim venting

Run the trim all the way up and let her sit 10 min. Now refill and run her down and let her sit 10min. Repeat as necessary.

    Boat Radio/Stereo Help

DB, there is an exception to your statement. An automatic bilge pump, if you keep the boat in the water, should be directly connected to a battery, bypassing the off switch.

    Bad voltage to starter

If you use carb cleaner on a starter windings, there is a very good chance the solvents in the carb cleaner will dissolve the varnish on the winding wires, ruining the starter by causing may shorted windings.
