    1977 Mercury 1500

Your motor will have the quick disconnect on the starboard side of the engine. If the adaptor you bought fits that, they you have no issue. All Mercs of that era used 1 extra wire. On your motor it is the orange or salmon colored one. It will have a female connector in the boat harness, but...

fixing gouges/exposed fiberglass in hull of my '89 speedboat

Marine-tex is a fine product. You could use ployester marine putty as well. You will need to sand and feather the hull, wipe with acetone and then apply the putty. After she hardens up, sand her smooth and apply a colored gel coat, or some spray paint for color.

You should repost this in the Mercury OB forum. Did you replace both switchboxes?

Cleaning grease and sand off prop shaft.

The Purple Stuff cleaner is a very good degreaser. Also, paint thinner will work well. Pretty much any solvent you have laying around should work. The good news is that the prop shaft is not fragile, so you can use most anything plus a wire brush (if necessary) to get her clean.

    Replacement Leaf springs

Measure between the bolts that hold the ends of the springs. That should be the spring length. You want the spring to be in contact with both bolts, with no load on the trailer. Slipper springs are pretty common. Shop around There is a place in Delaware that is pretty good (eastern...

    Spare gas tank

The rule of thumb or fuel is 1/3 out, 1/3 third back, 1/3 in reserve. So take some trips and see what meets that ratio.

    1977 Mercury 1500

I do not think parts are hard to find. Tune up stuff like spark plugs, waterpumps, carb kits and the like are readily available. If you break some part of the motor, that is a bit more tricky, but the web is a wonderful thing for stuff like that. Your mechanic probably never worked on one of...

    1977 Mercury 1500

Control boxes can be any Mercury compatible one you can find. I am using the MerControl from my '77 on my '93 Merc. The shift and throttle cables are the same. Boat harnesses are available on the web for $$. You could make your own from wires colored red, white, black, grey, yellow and...

    Spray Epoxy?.

looking at the web site...people spray that crap over the exterior paint of their cars! So now their hoods look like the interior of the trunk on a 70's Chevy Nova? Not for me. Not for my boat either I think. Too many cool colors and textures of indoor-outdoor carpet. However, it is your...

    Spray Epoxy?.

Not sure I would want that roll on stuff on my floor. How to get it off, if/when it goes bad or you don't like it. Also black is real hot on hot days. There are some marine vinyl products with non-slip ability. You glue 'em down like carpet. There are also a whole lot of different kinds...

    1979 murcury thunderbolt

The maxrules web site will have the wiring diagram. The boat and engine wiring harnesses are avail on the web. By now the engine wiring harness is likely bad. Look for crumbling insulation. If that motor is a '79, it will have 4 ign coils and no distributor. if it has a distributor, it is...

    Power Trim issue

Sounds like the trim rods have air in them. I am not sure why that would happen, when the tilt cylinder seems full of oil. The tilt cylinder gets it's oil via passages drilled in the stainless steel pin on the very bottom of the PT unit that the trim cylinder pivots on, So one would think...

    Spray Epoxy?.

The problem with spraying polyester or epoxy resin is getting it to penetrate the cloth weave. You can spray it with the right spray gun and tip, but you will still need to roll or use a brush to work it into the cloth. It would be better to brush and roll the resin first, sand it smooth and...

Mercury M-800 Thunderbolt Full Throttle Only Now Help

Nah, I just had a '77 Merc 1500 and a '73 Merc 850, and now have a '93 Merc 135V6. I do all my own work. The 1500 and 850 share carbs with your engine, and the '93 shares ign systems with small differences, with your motor.

Merc Alpha4 no longer available. What to replace it with?

Turning point makes a 4 blade aluminum prop. It has 2 pairs of slightly different blades designed for for speed and power, respectively. I have one on my 21 footer w/150 HP Johnny. I like it much more than the TP Hustler I replaced with it, although I do not have the stats to back it up...

    Stuck lower unit

There should be a roll pin on the top of the shift rod, under the carbs. Not sure how one could drive it out, to free the upper shift rod, but that is better than pulling the shift cam out of the gearbox.

    Power Trim issue

When I say tilt tube, I refer to the threaded pipe that the transom clamp that the steering cable goes thru. There are grease fittings that need some grease, for tilt to move freely.

Mercury M-800 Thunderbolt Full Throttle Only Now Help

Steve, To check the idle pickup timing, simply remove prop and spark plugs as described. Now advance throttle handle in boat (likely motor needs to be in gear), until carbs are ready to open but still closed. Now you can jumper starter with ign on and read timing. I expect your timing will be...
