    Stuck lower unit

Texasmark, Merc did use mild steel driveshafts in the early 70s and before. However, that motor, if it is original gearcase will have a SS driveshaft. The shiftshaft coupler is splined to mate with the shiftshaft. One could reach under the lower carb and move the shiftshaft up/down to see if...

    1979 Merc 2 stroke 4 cylinder 50hp

The original MerControl would have a choke button. Newer ignition keys and controls could have push to choke. You need to choke that motor to start it, so find out what you have. To start that motor, cold start lever all the way up. Pump primer until hard. Hold choke button down(or push...

    Power Trim issue

Trim fluid goes into the reservoir only. Fill the reservoir, with the trim all the way up and the boat level, until it overflows. Now run the trim down all the way, and then up all the way and let her sit a few minutes for the bubbles to gather at the top of the reservoir. Refill and repeat a...

    Wiring education

Marine grade wiring is special, and not used everywhere it should be, likely because of cost. It is tinned, stranded, wiring, but the strands are thinner and more numerous for a given gauge wire, versus non-marine grade wire. The insulation is likely heavier as well. The tinned strands allow...

    Painting boat

The "Roll and tip" method of painting gives a near sprayed look and is real easy. Home Despot has a oil based alkyd marine paint by Rustolium. I have not tried it, but it looks to be heavy duty. I'll bet it would roll and tip real well, and it is $15/qt, versus $40/qt for Brightside marine...

    Battery replacement?

Gee, check prices at wallyworld and autozone. here in NJ, Wallyworld is 40% cheaper, at least.

Mercury M-800 Thunderbolt Full Throttle Only Now Help

Those Seloc manuals can have some real bad errors in them. Since that motor is so old, not many mechanics will work on them. You might look around for a factory service manual. The timing procedure I provided should get around any errors in the Seloc, at least for link and synch.

This might seem like a dumb question ... But!

You should only be able to blow thru the pump one way. That would be the direction the fuel travels.

    1969 Mercury 1100ss tilt/trim

The trim cylinders on my '77 Merc IL6 were sealed with orings. The piston was sealed with a teflon seal, which required a special tool to install. If she is leaking around the trim rod, you might go on crowleymarine and see if they have an exploded diagram of the trim cylinders. Those...

    Battery replacement?

Batteries normally last 5-6 years, in my experience. I would think you will want two 27 series starting/deep cycle combo batteries, or maybe one deep cycle battery and one starting battery. What do you have now?

Impeller kit for Merc 1992 135hp blackmax

The impeller, wearplate and several gasket kits fit many models. You can usually just grab a mercury V6 kit from a dealer or marine store and it will fit. What does crowleymarine say?

    Stuck lower unit

Seized spline can and does happen. See if the shift rod is willing to separate, as that can contribute. People use wooden wedges to help it separate. I would expect hanging it upside down 1 inch off the floor and spraying the driveshaft with penetrating oil would help. After it separates...

Mercury M-800 Thunderbolt Full Throttle Only Now Help

Assuming the carbs are clean, it sounds like you need to do a link and synch. Remove all spark plugs and the prop and stick a ruler into the top spark plug hole and read the distance to the top of the piston at it's minimum (TDC). A dial indicator is best, a caliper is second best and a steel...

What are the essential tools to keep on board?

An additional prop is a good idea, if you can change it. Some larger boats make that real hard. What do you mean by "Prop serviced"? Does some shop actually do something other than grease the prop shaft and spray paint the blades?

1973 Mercury 500 control box (key ignition, choke, shift-interrupter, tach connector) wiring questions

Yu can use a push to choke ign switch. Just connect the grey wire to the choke terminal. The original ign switch needed to provide ign power to one side of the choke button. A push to choke has that wired internally. The orange or salmon wire is the usual ign killer wire. Not sure why it...

    Bolts ?

I have had luck with a mapp gas torch. If you heat the bolt and apply a penetrant and let it cool, it can pull the lubricant into the threads. You usually need to repeat the hot-lube-cool cycle several times.

Removing Cylinder Head 1960 18hp Lightwin.

I had an IL6 Merc powerhead sitting upright on it's mounting studs, in the garage, and one cylinder's piston rings rusted to the cast iron liner. I was able to free it easily, with a brass drift thru the spark plug hole. That motor was flushed and drained before the powerhead was pulled and...

What are the essential tools to keep on board?

Lou, Are you really going to change the impellor, while on a boating trip? The rest of your list makes sense, although, you likely will not need most of it. I would recommend towing insurance as a 2 hour tow can cost $750 or so. A spare prop and wrench is a real good idea, as the hubs can...

    1994 60HP won't start

So starts with starting fluid and then dies? Sounds like a clogged carb.

    Trim issues

The ATF fluid will also turn pink when water gets into it. Of course the boat needs to be in the water for that to happen.
