    Marine Growth Took Over.-

Gee, I spend 2 hours bottom painting my boat, and get to have it tied to my dock in summer. That beats summer trailer storage everytime....

    Holeshot repaired - Now Surging

The vapor separator cover must seal to it's body. A new gasket may be in order. Air leaks there are the same as air leaks anywhere in the fuel line.

OK, did you check the vapor pump?

ngk buhw-2 vs buhw spark plugs for 90hp merc?

If you put a straight edge across the end of the spark plug, it appeared the center electrode protruded a bit more, out of the spark plug. It was a while ago, and my memory may be wrong, however, I do not think your theory of higher voltage and heavier sparkplug wire insulation is correct.

    Holeshot repaired - Now Surging

One more thing, the fuel mixture adjustment screw on the carbs only affects idle mixture. At RPMs above 1200 or so, it has no effect.

    Holeshot repaired - Now Surging

That sounds like a fuel delivery problem. You might check the vapor pump. The vapor pump in conjunction with the OMS pump are responsible for supplying the carbs with enough fuel to run at any speed. In addition check all fuel line connections, the antisiphon valve at the fuel tank and the...

ngk buhw-2 vs buhw spark plugs for 90hp merc?

Not sure that gap information is correct. My '77 Merc 1500 called for BUHW, where my '73 Merc 850 called for BUHW-2. They both had the same battery driven CDI ignition system. The BUHW-2 always looked to have a slightly longer electrode projection, but that is just a guess.

    Coil for 74 mercury 650

Distributor motor or multi coil? In either case, Sierra should make one. The old distributor models had the old ugly brown plastic one. The newer ones were black with a metal case, and much smaller.

And tilt the motor up. Be sure to check the zinc anodes to see if they still exist. If no anodes, check the gearcase for pitting or worse. I have seen gearcases rot away at the waterline, like they were cut off with a knife.

    Decarb

Tony, I would advise you to make sure all that decarbon stuff is out of the motors. That strong of a solvent laying around all winter in the motors cannot be good.

Do not pump water - Mercury outboard motor

Not to be glib, if you do not fix your issue, it will cost you at least $500/cylinder for a repair. Waterpump kits are less than $50.

Backfire but wont start - Low Compression?

OK, upon further review, my memory is a bit off. Here is update to post #6 Your compression is pretty typical for that motor. It sounds like the timing is off. Turn flywheel until timing mark on it aligns with mark on rear of block and on pull starter. Now open throttle until distributor...

Mounting bolt template for 1977 mercury 1150 with tilt

I doubt you will find that bolt pattern on any Jackplate. It is unique to Mercs of the 70s'. With luck you can drill holes to match the motor and trim brackets. I have one I drilled for my '77 Merc 1500. Lifting your motor up for shallow water, with a manual Jackplate is probably a bad idea...

Backfire but wont start - Low Compression?

Your compression is pretty typical for that motor. It sounds like the timing is off. OK, from memory...turn flywheel until timing mark on it aligns with mark on rear of block and on pull starter. Look at timing mark on distributor pully. It should align with mark on pulley base. If not, pull...

    Mercury quicksilver Control Wiring

The front plug on the MerControl has 3 wires they are ground, switched power and tachometer signal. Hence they can power a tach, fuel gauge, lights for speedo and water pressure gauge. Your motor likely doesn't have a thermostat, and runs cold at idle and warmer at cruise. This is not ideal...

    1988 Mariner 115 HP Inline 6

Just hose it off. 2 cycle oil is real thin and should wash off. if not, the "Purple Stuff" cleaner will easily remove it.

    '95 Johnson 175 Replacements

Racer, The 175HP e-TECs look to be V6 engines. I was fooled by their slim cowling and the fact that e-TEC does make an inline 3 150HP motor. Well, they should build an inline 4 motor....IMO.
