    Sounds normal to me.----Did you winterize with a lot of storage oil ?-----Oil that sat in the exhaust housing and now leaked out ?

    That is not the pump that I would install on a 70 HP like that.---The 438557 is the correct one.

    A ruptured diaphragm would cause more smoke.-----A ruptured diaphragm would NOT cause high idle

    Curious as to why new carburetors were needed.------Smoke could mean a carburetor float valve is not working.-----Enricher ( choke as some call it ) is stuck open.---Fuel pump diaphragm is ruptured.-----Not hard to sort out.

    Tachometer reading up too 1100rpm once engine rpms is increased tach runs back down to below 0..

    Sorry----I do not think it works with the numbers like that.-----Most tachs work off alternator pulses !----Does not go by the number of cylinders.

    Price of a new VRO pump may shock you.-----Before spending beer tokens on this motor I would do a compression test.----Post the numbers here.----And does the hose for the tell tale come off the side of the block or off the top of the block ??----And you need to install a new impeller in water...

    The motor that is on there now is about 230 lbs.----If you are going to hang a 500 lb motor on there you need a new transom !!-----Chances of structure under the floor ( stringers ) having survived 50 years or so are not good either.---Some will argue.----This boat needs lots of work to be safe...
