    I can not see or hear your motor !!-----Take plugs out.----Crank it over.-----Do you hear the ---" poofff / poofff / poofff ----That would be crankcase compression.----Or remove carburetors and inspect the reed valves.-----All easy to do.

    To me it appears that a helicoil was installed.----Done poorly ( crooked ?) perhaps.-----Myself I would replace the housing.----Easy for me to say as housings are easy to find here.

    The compression values are an issue.-----Remove cylinder head and have a look.-----It could be a bad head gasket .----Or scored cylinders that will make you cry at an estimate to repair.

    Post the compression values.----And does spark jump a gap of at least 3/8" on both leads, yes or no?---Was there a lot of dirt in the carburetors ?----Perhaps check for a sheared flywheel key.----Is VRO in service and checked ?----Or mixing at 50:1 in your tank?

    It has a starter motor.----I assume it has a stator to charge the battery.----I believe you should install a battery to protect the battery charging bits !----Do not run it without a battery in the circuit.

    How does it run when boat is floating in water?-----Use a timing light to look for an ignition miss if there is one .----Perhaps throttle plates open too early.----Have you tried adjusting low speed mixture screw?----Thermostat in place and working properly ?

    After 1984 they went to 2 pawls.----As you have found one pawl is not hefty enuff.-----Also make sure rope is correct length to time the pulley !!-----The sheave is oval for a reason.

    Early motors used only 1 pawl.----A tough job for one pawl.-----So they went to 2 pawls.----Recoil was also mounted with rubber mounts so thar housing could flex and share load on the 2 pawls.-----I recommend you use 2 pawls, but it is up to you to act.
