Your 38 year old boat may had structural issues. Look for signs of rotten transom, stringers and deck before adding a tow rated tower or pylon.

depending on what your budget is, a good LiFePO4 or a good AGM group 27. as far as placement, if its just you in the stern of the canoe, put the battery under the foreward seat for balance. if its two people, put the battery in the center.

if the flywheel housing is set up for the 168 tooth flywheel, then yes. the motors are internally balanced which is why the crank changed from the non-balance shaft motors to the balance shaft motors.
Your 1984 is an AQ series drive. If it's a 290, it's aa much better drive than a bravo, and 10000 times better than an alpha
