    What you are hearing may be normal for a heavy prop , and running on a hose !-----No point in wasting good gear oil.

    Take the prop off and test run in forward and reverse.

    I understand that popularity of formula 1 went down when engines stopped screaming making lots of noise at 18,000 RPM.----Same with unlimited hydroplanes when they moved away from V-12 Merlin / Packard engines.----Turbines just are not the same.

    Some will argue.-----It sounds normal to me.----Have a look on the parts books for Suzuki and Johnson to see what the clutch dog looks like.-----The pinion gear / forward / reverse are always meshed.----It is the clutch dog that moves between forward and reverse that has that 10 / 15 degree...

    But you are supposed to shift quickly from neutral to avoid grinding the clutch dog on the spinning gears !!

    Is this while running on a hose ?----If yes that it may well be the prop causing the clutch dog to make the noise.----Tested in the water ?

    Even new oil smells. ---You are supposed to shift with a quick firm motion.---Easing it onto gear does the damage.

    What motor ?------Not sure why it would matter !----What is your motor doing / not doing ?----Also indicates that many folks have issues understanding 12 volts / wires.

    Bypass the fuel pump on the motor.-----Have your assistant operate the manual pump.----Does the motor now start and keep running , yes or no ?

    You might have a bad pump.----Or crankcase compression ( PRESSURE ) is not driving the pump.----Or issues with your hose , bulb or tank.---Should be easy to figure out.

    There is a chance that the impeller ran dry.----A wise man would have a look at it again.------Remember there is nothing on that motor that shuts it down on overheat.----And I doubt it has a warning horn for overheat.

    A number of years ago I said that the battery will be swapped out like on power tools.------A 1000 lb battery would take about 20 seconds or less.
