    Most bigger motors can be mounted higher using 4 different bolt holes.------The motor does not need to rest on the transom.

    Wiring diagram can be found online, yes it is there..----A stator upgrade kit was available as an accessory item.----Yes that linkage advances the timing.

    A 1989 model 28 HP does not have any internal anodes.----At least I have never seen one.----Do not have enough fingers to count how many head I have had off !!

    Best to wait until the boat is repaired / refurbished.------Owner may have the funds saved by then to repair / inspect the motor.-----May even have the funds to buy a newer motor by then.

    Have seen many ads from folks looking for those lower units or selling a motor that --" just needs a lower unit "------Not one of their best designs.----Have about 4 of those motors myself that need lower units.

    He clearly stated ( Post #24 and 29 ) that he had the exhaust cover off this motor.

    It is a know fact that these lower units are an issue.----No ball or needle bearings in them.-----Not as nice to work on as an OMC 9.9 / 15 lower unit.

    It is a left hand thread.------On some models the thrust bushing is turned around to become the tool to remove it.

    To me outboards are very simple machines.-----Should be easy to fix.----There will be an ---AHAA ----moment on this motor I believe.-----Over the years I have learned that often a motor with chronic problems is sold.-----And many folks mess up motors because they can not afford the $100+ / hr shop.

    How Can I get lower case off without reverse gear on my 1978 115 HP evinrude

    Model # of your motor ??---I thought the shift rod moves down for reverse on this 1978 motor.----Have you checked shift rod height on this motor ?
