    That motor is a short shaft , meant for a 15" transom.

    The temperature sensor just sounds the horn ( if it is working ) and it does not shut off the motor in case of overheat condition.

    Agreed---I thought grey was for tachometer in those days.----I do not believe there was a " safety shutoff " on a 1972 model 100 HP.----Testing the overheat warning horn on this 1972 model 100 HP might be a good idea.

    Make an adapter to fit a popular filter on there.-----There are so many good small filters to pick from.

    Pull flywheel.-----Clean rotor.---Check anti-reversing spring.----Clean distributor cap.-----Use timing light to see if you can pinpoint which cylinder is loosing spark.---Perhaps run at night and look for sparks jumping to flywheel.-----Does it still have the " clipper circuit " installed " on...

    Oil discussions are usually very entertaining.------Years ago someone said " why should we use factory oil in the 100 HP 1966 Johnson?----Why not a cheaper oil as the motor just burns it ? "----Just one example of how lubrication is mis understood.

    Johnson tn26 Recoil

    Think about it.----When recoil housing is upside down on your work bench the rotation is opposite.-----Yes , looking down on the flywheel the motor turns CLOCKWISE !
