    Can you check compression on a cold outboard?

    Cold compression tests are done all the time !-----Gives all the information you need.------Make sure battery is good and fully charged.-----Make sure test gauge is a good one.------And no the throttle does not need to be open to test compression on that motor !!

    Battery must be fully charged and load tested.-----Most motors today will not start with an old battery that turns the motor over but not fast enuff to produce a hot spark.

    I picked up some " nice looking " motors too.----For a song / box of beer.----Still needed rebuilding.----Have you done a compression test on that nice motor ?-----I get mixed up sometimes 12 beer is a " case " or a " box " in your hometown ?

    Agreed ---fresh water stuff would be hard to find there.----Midsections are plentiful here in some places.

    Stop revving it up in neutral.-----Clean the carburetors if it is equipped with them.

    Perhaps small creatures built a home in the cowling somewhere.-----Also look for wires that might be touching the cowling and killing spark to a cylinder.

    Intake bypass cover is easier to remove and 1 gasket be a lot cheaper than the 2 exhaust cover gaskets !

    The 85 HP block has smaller intake ports on sides of cylinder.----Why are you looking at another block ?----I thought you already picked up a motor ( $300 screach tokens ) to use in your project.
