    The shift mechanism is in the nose of the lower unit.----The plunger moves DOWN for reverse.----The bore of the plunger has suffered and the shift rod can not go down.----Took one apart one time to salvage parts.----Hacksaw may be required to get the lower unit apart.----This is an expensive...

    Well----12 volts from the battery cranks the starter.---But 12 volts from battery is not used to make spark for the plugs.----Work carefully before big $$$ mistakes are made.

    Cylinders could be scored.---Head gasket could be blown.---Piston and rings could be worn out.--------Your arm could be weak.-----Test with a rope on the flywheel.-----And no the throttle does NOT need to be open.----And no it it is NOT a reed valve issue.

    This thing is NOT running with full power.-----How many times do you have to be told ?----Sorry to be blunt.-----If you have torn the carburetors down 5 times it is not a carburetor problem.----Checked the flywheel key ??----And no you can not find a sheared key with a timing light!

    Just install a new gasket.----And replace the seal on the crankshaft.---Remove seal housing 3 bolts.----Dealer will help with getting you the parts.----First picture is a foam seal and not that important.

    Almost impossible.-----Did you screw the plug wires into the coils before installing the coils ?----I have a number of these motors and never had this issue with factory parts.----Set the breaker points with a meter ?

    " Performance " means different things.----No a CDI motor might start easier with no maintenance required.----But a motor with CDI ignition does not go faster.

    Running way too hot.-----Due to preignition.----Lugging with too much pitch on prop.----Timing too far advanced.----Water pump ignored ETC , etc.----Yes lean on oil too.

    Points are a cheaper system to own if you know how to maintain them , do the work yourself.----If you run to the $100 / HR shop for every little hiccup then electronic is the bestest way to go.

    Need Some VRO Guidance Please!

    Take the VRO pump apart.---See what is wrong.----Repair as needed.----The VRO is driven by CRANKCASE pressure pulses.---So check that.,----A cylinder compression test may offer clues.

    Looks like a late 80's or early 90's 30 hp to me .----That style / model of motor was not marketed as a 40 HP in those years !!

    Did you install the motor yourself ?----Did you follow a procedure to set this motor up.---Like verify that lube system is ready to operate, no air in the lines ?
