    As clearly state 76 and newer.----You can adapt the 1974 unit.----If bolted on it will shift to reverse when you select forward.----Somewhat inconvenient.----You would have to change linkages on the motor.-----And before you ask no there is nothing you can do in the control box !!

    Corrosion products form between the bushing and aluminum.-----Oxygen joins with the aluminum to form aluminum oxide ( white powder ) thus there is more material now ( oxygen ) and the works jams up !!

    Just 3 cylinder motors 60 / 70 HP from about 1976 to 1988 use the coarse spline.----I repeat just the 3 cylinder models use the coarse spline.

    Have your boat weighed.----At one time " winner boats " used individual plastic containers for flotation.-----Not sure about yours.-----If boat is water logged it will be slow !----Note---Some high performance offshore boats use 5 blade props.-----Blades may not all be in the water all the time.

    I used to do some anodizing of aluminum and also magnesium.-----Uses electricity in a chemical bath.----Quickly coverts the surface aluminum to an oxide.

    Could be a slight leak / mis-alignment of the reed valves.-----Or an issue with oil recirculation passage way on reed valve mounting plate.----Remove carburetors / inspect reed valves.--Replace gasket.

    You do not understand the concept.----You lay the timing light on a seat so you can observe the flashing of the light !----No flash means you have lost spark !----Does spark jump a gap of at least 3/8" ( 1 cm ) on a test device ?

    ??----The thing with the red lever is the electric primer valve.-----That wonderful unit essentially replaced the choke flappers on your motor.---The roller opens throttle plates and has nothing to do with choking this motor.-And why are you referring to a low gear cable and a high gear...

    Run with a timing light hooked up.----One cylinder at a time.----See if there is a spark issue as boat speeds up.-----Running with VRO in service ?---Tested VRO oil output ?-----Or a simple non mixing pump with 50:1 in your tank ?-----Perhaps test run with another tank and hose.

    Test with another gauge.----Or if gauge is good you have serious piston / ring problems.

    You need-----Spark at the right time.----Compression in the cylinder.----Correct ( not too much or too little ) amount of fuel.------Compression in the crankcase.

    Sorry ----I edited the other post.---It appears there is bushing not a bearing.----Same issue with corrosion like there is on all plastic bushings on outboards.---Understanding corrosion and what takes place makes it easy to understand.

    ----If water get in there you get corrosion.------The corrosion products build up and jam up the works.----Not really a hardened grease issue !

    If this is a 4 cylinder motor the reed valves do exist.-----They are way inside the motor on the crankshaft assembly !----Easy to find on paper.----Many hrs of work to get your hands on them.

    I would do a oil consumption / oil output test on your VRO pump.----Too much risk running with a unit you do not trust.
