    I would check for spark, check compression, and find why you have a fuel smell. Check the tell-tale hose from the fuel pump. If it has fuel in it, your fuel pump failed and is dumping raw fuel into the carb

    And if you pull the rockers, pushrods, or lifters. Label them. They must go back in the exact same location.

    An overheat causes the headgasket to leak into the cylinder walls because an iron head and open-deck aluminum block is not the smartest design Only being able to turn 90 degrees would have me pulling the motor and putting it on a stand regardless of the motor

    stop turning the crank from the crank bolt. always use the starter or flywheel teeth. since you removed the drive, you have a motor issue. if the head gasket went on the motor, you will have rust in the cylinder bores.

    powder coat was not used in the 70's and 80's on boats. at least for the Mirrocraft it was a wet-spray process by two blokes smoking cigarettes prior to the conveyor taking it into an oven.
