    Correct ---you have to find motor linkages from a 73 , 74 , early 75 model.---Should not be hard to find the correct lower unit.----Your location ?

    Yes the single lever control box can be used.----You also need to find the correct adapter ( for the lower cowling ) to install the shift cable.

    The difference in compression is an ominous indicator of an issue in the cylinder.

    Lots of room on the inside for hefty ( 3 layers ) structural repair.----Go 6" above and 6" below the cut.-----Cosmetic fix on the outside.------In rough water and waves you do not want any flexing there.

    The shift handle and shaft have a detent.----This would be clearly felt when shifting this motor without lower unit attached.----With lower unit attached it might be a wee different.----Should not change by installing a new CORRECT o-ring.

    Rectifier has nothing to do with spark.----Battery is not involved with making spark.----Test this magneto before you install it on the motor.

    Smell like gasoline ?----Perhaps a leaking fuel pump or carburetors if it has those.

    It fits in a grommet half way up the exhaust housing and into a grommet in the pump.----Put the tube into the exhaust housing FIRST.

    These motors from a bout 1964 to late 1980's all used the same impeller-----4 and 6 cylinder Mercury also Mercruisers used the same impeller.-----Every good boat shop would have it in stock.----Last 2 numbers in the part number are----84-----Should be easy to find on a list.
