    Perform a check on magneto belt timing.----Belt timing might be off.----Or plug wires going to the wrong cylinders.----Does spark jump a gap of 5/16" on all of the 4 leads ?

    That tool can be used on motors from about 1980 to the present.------Surely shops have that tool kit !!-----Your location ?

    No it is not.------On the starboard side of the motor there is a wee oil recirculation line.-----Comes from the bottom of the motor and goes to top bearing.---Find it and inspect it.-----Serial # of your motor ?

    Drilling a wee hole in the adapter just below the power head is the best way to get penetrating oil in there for those long screws !!

    You have to shim new gears.----Using the factory shimming unit ( I have that item ) here.------Called gear pro's some time ago and answer on shimming ( using factory tool ) was not very clear at the time.

    No need to mix in a separate tank.-------Add oil then the fuel coming in will mix it all up.-----Post #1 is missing some information.----Was tank completely empty ?------How long have you owned the boat ?-----First time that you added the oil before adding the fuel ?

    ??----There must be a bolt on top of the bracket that the motor spins / tilts on !-----It is item 25 and has a friction block and tension spring as well.----Was motor used in salt water ?

    A well used 30 year old motor needs a seal kit !----All seals including the o-ring on the shift rod.

    There should be no water in any modern gearcase.-----They are sealed to keep oil in and water out !

    You have a wonderful opportunity to look / listen / learn.----Torque those bolts to 160 inch lbs !

    ???----Your bolts are NOT -----7/16"-----Well the wrench you use might be 7/16".-----The bolts are 5/16" mate !!!!----And the threads in the block are aluminum.

    Drill a wee hole from the side near the top of the bolt.-----That gets penetrating oil in there.------Some of those bolt cavities fill with aluminum oxide and jam the bolt solid.-----Then drill through from the side to cut the bolt !!
