remember, if you can see your thermostat and other devices on your smart phone, others can too. my step son hacked all the "smart" devices the other day with an app he was playing with What my father did when he was alive and would come to FL to visit for weeks at a time. he installed a wall...

Fuel tank to engine hose routing

the only issue I would see would be the additional head you would have to overcome with the fuel pump vs running below deck. so to get fuel to the motor initially may really be difficult. some people simply run a 2 or 3" diameter length of PVC under the deck to run hoses, wiring and cables...

Updating the motor on an old boat

sounds like operator error. or as my buddy's race mechanic says...... need to tighten the nut behind the wheel. the fuel issues are maintenance and not having enough fuel. that would also happen with a new motor if it had the same issues.

Any tricks to get Aluminum transom to tighten up post Tig?

hammer and dolly. welding should shrink the panel. generally 3%, however up to 6% of the weld length. when we have weld distortion at work, we simply weld both sides. another thing you can do, heat the area up with a heat gun to about 350F and then rapidly cool with a few cans of freon...

    Add gauges or not?

FWIW..... there are gauge sender caps available. I believe that Rockford makes them. they screw in place of the tank cap and have a connector that you can run to a gauge. https://rochestergauges.com/ and I believe Moeler has portable fuel tanks with gauge senders they have the add-on module...

    mercruiser carburetor

mercruiser has literally been putting GM 350's (5.7 liters) in boats for well over 55 years. you have to be a bit more specific. like exact year and we need the serial number. over that time there have been 4 generations of 5.7 liter motors, and about 8-10 different carburetors used.

    mercruiser carburetor

first, welcome aboard second SAEJ1223 is the certification for marine carburetors. not the part number of the carburetor. start by year of engine and serial number if you have it. Third, most carburetors can simply be cleaned and rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of a new carburetor.

Updating the motor on an old boat

FWIW......the older motors are usually simpler and more reliable than many of the "newer"motors. Motor reliability is directly proportional to the maintenance it recieves Have not stated what your motor is yet, what issues you are having. The only things we know are the boat is a 1977, the...
