    1995 Crownline 202BR Restore

Motor mounts are installed. Covered the bottoms and sides with CSM before installing them. Height and levelness (word?) are dead on so looking good in terms of engine fit. For reference, I ended up using about 20oz of PB for each mount.

I also used a table saw to get the bottom angle. That worked really well once I figured out the appropriate angle. My original mount was overly complex. It had multiple step downs and angled corners that are not necessary. My version was much easier to build and will be easier to glass. Maybe...

Check my transom thickness this morning after adding 1708 layers yesterday and got 1.975" to 1.985". So added 1 more layer this morning. I'll check it tomorrow but should be good to go. Went with the laminated motor mounts. Cut those and did the lamination yesterday. Today I did some sanding...

Thanks for the feedback. I'll pursue the laminated ply. On the keyhole, the original was gel coated I think. I was thinking about this before and my initial thought was to csm the sides. Seems straightforward.

Speaking of engine mounts, my plan is to duplicate the originals using a couple of 2x6s with a 3/4" plywood in the middle to get the right thickness. I'll have to add some more of the 3/4" plywood to the top to get the right height profile. I plan to use the marine plywood I used for the transom...

    1995 Crownline 202BR Restore

Got the transom tabbed in and 2 layers put down over the inside surface. I ended up doing the main center section with 2 overlapping pieces, and the "wings" separately. Much easier to manage that way. I also mixed ~20oz of resin at a time which gave me plenty of time. One tip that helped a...

I did cut the bottom off. It may not be clear in the picture but there is a couple of inches between the top of the drain hole and the bottom of the wood.

Transom is installed! Biggest issue I had was not making enough PB. I made 4 quarts to start with. Ended up using 7 which created a bit of a time crunch at the end. My fillets were rushed so they'll need some cleanup. My PB receipt was equal parts resin & carbosil, with 1/4 cup chopped strand...

Did some experimenting with the resin and CSM to get a sense of the timing on the application. It's 70-75 degrees and I'm getting about 30min until tacky and about 1.5 hours until the leftover resin starts congealing in the container. My math was off on my initial measuring of the MEKP and it...

Question about mixing resin... I understand the glassing process to be soak the wood surface with resin until it stops absorbing it let the resin on the wood surface get tacky apply the CSM or 1708 to the wood wet out the CSM or 1708 repeat steps 3 & 4 as necessary to build layers Can I do all...

Got the transom cut out and glued using Titebond III. Based on the keyhole cutout, everything looks good. Did a dry fit and all looks good. Going to route out the extra space for the steering linkage at the top of the keyhole next. Hoping my USC order arrives by Friday so I can start the...

    1995 Crownline 202BR Restore

After some summer getaway time, I'm back at it. Made my fiberglass order from US Composite and found a local source with marine plywood. It's nice to be able to by it in by the sheet as I need it and not have to store extra as I really don't have room. Others have mentioned it before but USC can...

Not that I'm an expert but I've been reasonably impressed by the original build quality of the boat. There are some shortcuts I could see here and there but improper care clearly had a huge part in the outcome.

I'll look into the die grinder. Looks like a workable solution. Finished with all the big grinding this weekend. Still need to hit a few small spots, corners/edges with a dremel and get that top area above the transom smoothed out. Also need to cleanup all the residue and dust. It's hard to...

Question about the sidewall. The original setup for this boat had a layer of spongy foam glued to the sidewalls which were covered by a sheet of vinyl which was stapled to a wooden piece that went along the side of the boat just about where the top cap attaches to the hull (out of site with the...

Saturday is grinding day so more progress today. Finished with 95% of the floor. Just a few places that I couldn't see when it was covered in dust. Also got the deck lip ground away and up the sidewall. Ground down around the transom lip well. At the top of the transom, I can only get a few...

More progress... Removed the rotted piece running along the bottom (which I will replace) and cut out the lip of decking. Still need to finishing grinding some of the bottom to make sure I have a good surface for the new glass. Then will grind out the deck lip and sides.

Question... I have this "stringer" running along the keel starting from the ski locker to nearly the bow. I've seen other similar boats that don't appear to have this. The floor of the ski locker was resting on top of this "stringer" but the front part was just there by itself. Is this a...

Yep, Tyvek suit and a full face 3M respirator. It's a sweat factory but works!
