Small car transaxkes and GL4... dealer bent on putting GL5 - a cautionary tale

My wife's Kia requires 75W90 GL4 in the 5 speed transaxle. I was pretty sure GL5 was not a good substitute, but did some googling to make sure I was thinking of the right thing. I was. GL5 has additives that wear out the synchronizers and that's why the car's manual is calling for GL4...

Dry Joint manifolds. Sivery paste on riser "gaskets"

When I first took the risers off my dry joint 4.3 manifolds, there was silvery paste coating the metal "gaskets". Anyone know what the paste is? It kind of looks like the exhaust pipe sealant stuff that comes in a squeeze tube at the hardware store.

Oil extraction idea that was ahead of its time.

My 1964 VP i/o has a factory equipped, brass tube type oil extractor pump solidly mounted on the motor, piped right to the bottom of the oil pan. so nice come oil change time. I never have to look for the pump. I wonder why the industry decided that was too easy... maybe dealers complained it...

Boat Insurance. wondering if my boat is worth insuring.

I have a 92 Bayliner. Nada value is $2800 - $3200. To me the boat is worth way more (new engine/drive etc) but I suspect if I hit a giant log and rip the transom off, the insurance would offer me $2000 or so (assuming it works like car insurance) and then I'd have to fight to get $3K or whatever...

looking for a *new* riding mower/tractor hydrostatic, loader, snowblower-able

I only cut an acre, but my little 38" cut 14hp mower is getting tired and so am I. I would like a machine that has a small loader (mostly for carrying materials) and can run a snowblower - I wonder if anyone has any faves to look for as far as used brands/models. Tight turning radius and about...

Vibration - new Stainless prop on Mercruiser.

I just picked up a new Michigan Apollo XHS 4 blade stainless prop for my 92 V6 Mercruiser (50 or so hours on my SEI Gen 2 drive). With the new prop, I have a low frequency vibration on cruise that's rumbling through the whole boat. It's not there with the aluminum 20P 4 blade (also Michigan). I...

Canadians: renewed your old boat licence? only valid for 10 years.

doing some reading per the BC license thread below.... and just learned Canadian licences are only good for 10 years Due to recent changes in the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, pleasure craft licences are now valid for 10 years. If there are changes to your name or particulars of your vessel or...

    Painting numbers on PVC

Are there any paints available at the hardware store that will do a pretty decent job of putting registration numbers on a PVC inflatable? I know there are kits specifically for this, but all that stuff is 2 weeks shipping, or a 3 hour round trip drive to West Marine to find out it has to be...

Adding steering friction adjuster - tiller conversion of 1990 40HP remote... darn

I spent $150 on a used tiller before researching this... I removed the bolt that my remote model 1990 40HP has, where manual shows a tiller motor would have a friction screw. I tried longer bolts etc, but nothing adds tension. I guess I could just never grease it.... Looking in...

4.5 day train trip.. Via rail Toronto to Vancouver.

Did that trip out to BC a few weeks ago. What a blast. If you have ever thought about it...do it. Via's express deals site had 75% off pricing on the cabin for two. Ended up being a bit more than a plane ticket. We easily ate our tickets (and probably our weight). Think the exact opposite of...

Water well pic and question - how could this vent work?

I have a 70' drilled well with a pump at 66' depth. There's a puddle on the lawn so I' going to run a new supply line to the house above ground for now to see if it dries up. Here are the connections atop my well. The vent appears to be connected to the pressure line. There is a check valve in...

    question for Prinler

I noticed in another thread you mention using a 4.3 in place of the 3.8. Did you attach the OMC 3.8 manifolds to the 4.3? Were there any valve cover clearance issues? tks.

    Septic backed up

I got the tank pumped, and later noticed water running back into the tank from the outlet. I installed a backflow preventer valve at the outlet. Then I started questioning where this water is coming from. After a week of exploratory digging (by hand, I have lost 8 pounds!), I learned that one of...

Collector insurance - anyone have a policy that covers a changing collection?

I have 4 boats, and about 10 motors... most antiques. I buy and sell outboards and occasionally want to run them. I called my broker and they didn't know of any policies that were for this kind of thing. It's not a business, I certainly don't make money or perform service for anyone. Anyone...

better quality flat 4 pin trailer wiring

I'm getting tired of the 2 or 3 year lifespan of the trailer wiring connectors. Are there any trailer-side connectors with maybe a removeable cover and screw terminals or just something that doesn't all break if used in cold weather? seems like the cold affects it the most - insulation all...

best clear glue for membrane switch button rubbery stuff

The contacts on a couple of buttons on my wand for my heat/massage couch (mechanic's best friend) became tempermental. tried brake clean, crocus cloth...no success. then I realized there are extra "unused" buttons on the membrane layer (I guess for fancier couches with more zones) So I cut a...

Re: Cannot find SAE 20 or 20W motor oil for 44-year-old Sea Ray I/O I have more respect for the factory service manual and you and he are not reading the manual correctly, but yes it helps; helps prove that the wrong oil doesn't always cause a problem have a look at where 20W appears on this...
