No power at coil: Volvo Penta 3.0

Just wanted to updated that I think resolved the issue. I bypassed the kill switch (again) and now it seems to be working. That was the first thing I had tried, and it didn’t work, but maybe I had compounding issues (like just a regular hard start)? I still don’t know why I had continuity to...

No power at coil: Volvo Penta 3.0

Alldodge thanks for that wiring diagram. That’s extremely helpful. And yes that’s what the distributor cap looks like. Weird thing is that, even with the circuit opened at the kill switch (I physically cut the wires there) I still am getting continuity at the coil harness (on both the purple and...

No power at coil: Volvo Penta 3.0

Hm. That’s just what is stamped on the engine. Sort of new boat to me, but it does have a carb on it

No power at coil: Volvo Penta 3.0

Hey all. I have a 2001 Volvo penta 3.0GSPA. Was stalling immediately after the key was released to the “run” position. Via some other thread we got it to run by jumping a wire from the batter + directly to the coil. But now can’t figure out the real fix. Tried replacing the ignition switch and...

    VP 280 no reverse

If link #3 is the ‘reverse lock rod’ then it is attached just like in this pic (although the pic is a stock image..not of my boat). No cotter pin or a anything, but feeling around I don’t think I feel a hole for one anyways

    VP 280 no reverse

is there a possible correlation between these two problems or am I working with two separate issues? If possible I’d like to solve the fact that it can’t get into reverse first (while it’s still in the water). Once I have that figured out I can see if the marina can haul me to work on the...

    VP 280 no reverse

Ok here’s todays update haha. I was trying the trunion in a few different locations. In a couple positions I *think* it would go into reverse on the first try, but then not on consecutive tries (this is all with the engine on. With engine off and linkages disconnected I can shift easily between...

    VP 280 no reverse

Update: I just confirmed that the housing is indeed locked correctly into that anchor plate on the drive. What’s interesting is that if I detach the trunion/shift cable completely, then the linkage doesn’t actually have enough length to get the drive in reverse. But, in all of this, I never...

    VP 280 no reverse

I went out earlier this morning and messed with it. Nothing like standing in chest deep water working on your outdrive hoping you don’t drop something lol With the trunion threaded almost all the way back on the cable it seems like it just barely clicks into reverse (I assume it needs to fully...

    VP 280 no reverse

The trunion is the part I have labeled #1 in the attached pic? And the stainless lever is the part I’ve labeled #2? Or the lever is that oval shaped thing?

    VP 280 no reverse

I’ll get it to a spot tomorrow where I can get the cover off and check to make sure the linkages are working. I’ll be in the water so just have to make sure I don’t drop anything lol. Gear oil level is good. I did find this pic (attached) that I took when installing everything. Assuming the boat...

    VP 280 no reverse

Hey all I have a Volvo Penta 280 with no reverse. When I first put it in the water this season I tested it on the dock and it went into reverse just fine (or it did one time at least). But later, when I actually went to take it out…I get nothing. For what it’s worth, I had pulled the drive to...

VP 280: exhaust water out helmet area

Ok not to beat a deadhorse…but seems like every question I ask opens up a Pandora’s box…I have so much to learn still lol So today I idled at higher rpm’s (like 1,600’ish) and saw water come out the helmet area, BUT also big bubbles came from down deeper (see attached pic) So I’m wondering if...

VP 280: exhaust water out helmet area

Dang I don’t know why I wasn’t paying attention to that when I installed it all. I attached a pic of the YPipe I had bought. Seems like it does have the one relief port. So that plug must be in the transom shield. That hook rubber in your link looks like the remnants of whatever was leftover...

VP 280: exhaust water out helmet area

The attached pic is of the new install. Is the circled part where the idle relief would be? I guess in my old transom shield/y-pipe that went to the remnants of a completely blown out hose. In this new shield/y-pipe I guess it is plugged (although to be honest I don’t remember if the plug is in...

VP 280: exhaust water out helmet area

I’m not sure what the ideal relief ports are? My assumption was that it was the exhaust bellow had come loose. Am I stupid to not haul it and deal with it or is that just a minor problem that can be dealt with later?

VP 280: exhaust water out helmet area

Hey all I just pulled apart a VP 280 for a transom rebuild and (the the best of my ability) put everything back together. On the exhaust side of things this included new YPipes, rebuilt water pump, fresh bellows, resized some existing 3/4” water intakes to 1.25” etc. I’m now seeing when the...

    Only starts at WOT

In the end it seemed like it was the accelerator pump that had gone bad. Put a new one in and it seems to be running pretty great! (Even though I’m still only seeing one stream of fuel, as opposed to two, when I depress the pump). Thanks for all the help!

    Volvo Penta 3.0 stalling issues

Just to update and close out this thread…ends up there was a stone filter (where the fuel line enters the carb) that was totally filled with junK. I didn’t realize there were any filters past the fuel pump…but once that was cleaned up all was good. Thanks for everyone’s help
