    VP 280 Engine Alignment

Ok great. And final question (haha probably not my final one..but for today at least) . Is there a way of measuring off the transom shield before I drop the engine in to see if it seems like my stringers are close enough to the correct height? I’m pretty worried I goofed that part and don’t have...

    VP 280 Engine Alignment

sorry a few clarifying questions: What part of the engine are bosses located on? Also, since the engine mounts are bolted onto angle iron that can slide on the stringer, would it be best to mount the flywheel cover to the transom plate first, so I can slide the engine mostly into place while...

    VP 280 Engine Alignment

hey all, i have a volvo penta 280 and gm 350. i stripped everything down to rebuild a rotten transom, and then ended up doing the stringers in the engine compartment as well. i did my best to build the stringers that the engine was mounted to at their original height...but i'm pretty confident...

    VP 280 Transom Plate Removal

just to update…I finally got that clamp off. Unfortunately in my drilling escapades I damaged the mating surface of the bellhousing, so now I know not to go too deep. Yikes. In the end I had to use a small bottle jack (even my car jack couldn’t do it) to get the damn thing off. I drilled and...

    VP 280 Bellhousing Confusion

Ok I’ll holler at some machine shops. In the mean time…what is that part actually called? What would be the way to find a part number for it? I want to start researching seals/bearings etc for it and will be interested to compare the machine shops price with the cost of a getting a decent used...

    VP 280 Bellhousing Confusion

Here are some shots. First pic is the bellhousing along with the intermediate housing. Second shot shows one of the many bolts seizes/snapped off in there, but also shows the dings I caused with the drill bit when I was trying to get the clamp seal off…oopsie

    VP 280 Bellhousing Confusion

Ah…is there somewhere on that intermediate housing where I might find a part number so I can look it up? While extracting the clamp ring I messed up the surface of whatever surface the clamp ring was bolted too (which I’m assuming is that intermediate housing). I’ll have the engine pulled out...

    VP 280 Bellhousing Confusion

Hey all I have a Volvo Penta 280 with a GM350 and I think I need to get a new bellhousing, but I’m having trouble physically locating a part number on it. Where would that be stamped? Right now I am working off some online diagrams, but my bellhousing/flywheel cover doesn’t seem to match up...

    VP 280 Transom Plate Removal

Scott…what’s the name of the manual I should order? And yeah just read on another forum about breaking the clamp to get it off. Also wondering if pulling the engine forward and out would just separate the clamp…but sounds like it’s best to just break it and buy a fresh one ?

    VP 280 Transom Plate Removal

I just ordered a Clymers and a Seloc manual today…seems like those might have some more info in them. Right now I have been working off a “workshop manual” that just has one exploded view but doesn’t reference part names or numbers so I’m sort of shooting in the dark when I try and Google a...

    VP 280 Transom Plate Removal

Is the “aquamatic workshop manual” the only manual to reference all this?

    VP 280 Transom Plate Removal

Well this is going just about as rocky as I should have figured. Of the 6 bolts only 5 were installed (other hole is just filled with silicon). Two are totally mangled and im still trying to extract them. 1 of them I got out. And the other 2 snapped. I’m trying to find specs on those bolts..and...

    VP 280 Transom Plate Removal

Can you confirm if that part I notated with the arrow is the clamp you are referring to? Also, I’m not sure what you mean about using three of the bolts to “jack off the clamp” but maybe that will make sense once I’m out there looking at it Anything else I should look into R&R on while I have...

    VP 280 Transom Plate Removal

Oh dang. Thanks for the save Scott. We had disconnected the engine at the bell housing, because that's how I had pulled the engine prior. Is the PDS clamp the part that I've noted with a red arrow to in the attached pic? If so, we just take that off and then pull the engine back with everything...

    VP 280 Transom Plate Removal

Hey all, I have to repair my rotten transom and have a few questions. I have a Volvo Penta 280. So far I have gotten the drive off. The engine is disconnected but I haven't pulled it yet. I'm assuming that to drop the steering fork I take the nut off in the engine compartment and then try and...

85 Force delayed stall at WOT

I have an 85 Force that seems totally fine for the first 20 -30 min at WOT and then suddenly it bogs down. If we take the throttle down quick enough you can idle and chug along just fine forever. If you don’t throttle down soon enough…it stalls. Seems like if you wait 5-10 min with the engine...

    spun prop?

i have an 80's 85 hp force outboard. recently it hasn't been going as fast as it was earlier in the season. can hardly get on plane with one person in it, and definitely can't with more than one person in it. it works just fine at low speeds though. i pulled the prop off today and marked along...

    85hp Force Under powered

Hm. I guess I don’t know the difference between the trigger coil and the stator. I don’t have a puller so I haven’t gotten the flywheel off yet, but here is a pic from what I can see. The circled area is where the yellow wire came from. Looks a little crispy maybe? If it was salvageable that...

    85hp Force Under powered

Sorry for so many updates. Traced everything back and gave a little tug on the white wire coming from the stator (the one that ultimately feeds the coil that isn’t firing) and it slid right out. Hoping there is a way to just get it back into the stator with some epoxy or something...

    85hp Force Under powered

Yeah I looked briefly at ourboardignitions but some of the language in the diagnostic steps seemed over my head. I don’t have a DVA meter. I did what you mentioned though (swapped packs) and the spark follows the swap, so I think I have traced it as far as the plug and play connector that has...
