    Ok guys, I figured it out and my bolt was way too tight at the shifter( I didn't know how tight it had to be).     Yes, when the cables are not hooked up it shifts perfectly. Could you maybe explain the preload thing? I don't know what that means. I am able to shift into gears with the cables not hooked up.

    Could someone help me please? I was able to get my 1979 80 hp started but something doesn't seem correct. It starts pretty good but if I go to move it out of neutral, it revs really high, I don't dare to see if it goes into forward gear. any info on this would be greatly appreciated thanks.

    Thanks for the info, I’ve been doing all this but still having troubles in the final step (getting the shift shafts to mate). Rocking the throttle handle, do you mean side to side or front to back? Been doing it alone cause I don’t have any help. Thanks
