1975 Johnson 115 water tube repair

Is there an easy way to see if water is leaking at this join between the tube and the housing once lower unit is installed? Does it has to be a perfect seal to get adequate cooling pressure?

1975 Johnson 115 water tube repair

Freshwater motors are quite hard to find here in Australia. Not many of these early twin water tube motors still around at all. I think chances of finding one in better condition are slim. Im fairly committed to the motor at this point so i think repair is my only real option.

These are the bits of irrigation tube they jammed in there

1975 Johnson 115 water tube repair

Ok. Im not having loads of luck with this engine right now. Previous owner had tried to use pieces of irrigation tube as guide tubes. They had crushed into the housing causing the tubes to bend out of shape. I am wondering about the best way to repair these. I think they are beyong bending...

This coming out of 1975 Johnson 115 lower unit.

The closest BRP dealership is over an hour away. I rang them and they said Hi Vis has been replaced in their catalog by XPS Gear lube. The guy said that Hi Vis was 90W. I have a Merc dealer just down the road though. Would their Quicksilver Premium Gear Lube 80W90 work?

I understand this unit is not an electric shift but a hydro mechanical shift. The original factory manual calls for OMC Sea-Lube premium blend gearcase lube. It says that if this is not available to use Dexron transmission fluid. My 2 easiest options are: Marine gear oil synthetic 75W90 or...

Help with troubleshooting electrics on 1975 Johnson 115

Are you saying that you think the stator could be the cause of my weak spark, or just that the stator might give me charging problems down the track? I had read that stators and coils rarely cause problems on this model.

Help with troubleshooting electrics on 1975 Johnson 115

Ok. So i have this engine with very weak spark. The spark is thin and yellow and can only jump a small gap on the spark tester. Here's what I have done so far. Checked compression. About 115 across all 4 cylinders. Engine is spinning fast on starter. New battery. Ground connections all...

This coming out of 1975 Johnson 115 lower unit.

I have done all this. Replaced connectors on cables and then even tried cables from the other motor. Cleaned all earths on the motor. The starter that came on the motor had a cracked magnet and so i replaced with a good used one. The motor is cranking over nice and fast now with my new 100ah...

This coming out of 1975 Johnson 115 lower unit.

With my new battery I was able to get a weak yellow spark across the spark tester but only with the plugs out and nothing like strong enough to jump a 7/16 gap.

Good to know thanks. Yes in regards to the lower unit, I believe that pattern is the same but the later 1980 model has the shift rod setup differently. To use later model lower units would require intake manifold also from later model. This was another idea I was considering but haven't got the...

I have all electrics off a 1980 Johnson 85 which are in good shape with CDI timing base that looks pretty good and was thinking of doing a transplant of the whole ignition system and making brackets for the coils and power packs. Problem I came across was that the bearing carrier at the top of...

Thanks i'll do in that order. Compression test then pressure test on lower unit. I got told by previous owner that compression was 115 across all cylinders but won't take their word for it. I have no spark. I made a DVA tester - stator resistance (624ohms) and DVA (260V) ok although stator shows...

I decided I'd get prepared and change the fluid in the lower unit of my motor while I work on troubleshooting the electrics. I have only owned the motor for about 1 month and not had it running yet but overall it is in good condition. When I undid the plug this is what came out. It was thick and...

    1975 Johnson 115 starter motor

I believe that it does require some modification. Top and bottom bushes and some clearance cut from bottom of cowling I am told and maybe a couple of other small things. A bit of hassle but it looks like the old Calco trim and tilt is pretty shot on this motor so maybe less hassle than sorting...

    1975 Johnson 115 starter motor

Old school.. I might try. I have it on a rack that is not terribly stable but might be able to secure it enough.... I just came across an entire 1981 Evinrude 90hp (EL90TCIM) with a seized powerhead which I can get for $200. Not many compatible parts with mine unfortunately but I believe the...

    1975 Johnson 115 starter motor

Who knows what the previous owner did - possibly one or both! I do get your point that if it was hit by a hammer then something must have prompted them to do it. Both the + and - battery terminals had ring terminals that were just flopping around when I got it so that might have contributed to a...

    1975 Johnson 115 starter motor

Beats me but someone is getting a pretty big markup. Here's another link with similar price. I have submitted an enquiry to iboats shop for shipping to Australia. I can't seem to calculate it online. If shipping is reasonable i'll probably get a Sierra one sent over from the US...

    1975 Johnson 115 starter motor

Thanks. The only reasonably priced ones I can find here are Chinese (no brand) ones from ebay for about $160. The Sierra one new here is $475AUD ($335USD) which is more than I paid for the whole motor. They are heavy so shipping one directly from the US adds a fair bit. Even wreckers sting us...

    1975 Johnson 115 starter motor

I just bought the above engine. The previous owner said it had no spark. I hooked it up to a battery and found the starter would barely turn the motor over. I isolated the cause to the starter motor and pulled the starter apart. One of the magnets was broken. These starters seem to be very...
