    Chrysler 6 HP points

Was replacing the points on my 1978-79 Chrysler 6 hp and noticed that when rotating the crankshaft/cam the point (rub) is not always in contact with the cam. I was under the impression from working on other motors that the 'rub' was always in contact with the cam. Is this normal or am I...

6 Hp chrysler - points question

I looked at the cam that I replaced (another story) and there's a wear mark just before and after top-dead-center - an inch or so on before and after. This may indicate that the point of contact is not continual. Just a thought!

    4 HP Force idle/engine races

I have a 1987 Force 4 HP Model 42F7A. It's like new; used twice in it's life before I took it out on the lake yesterday. I ran it for a couple of hours and ran great and started up okay. It idles (slow speed) decently when in gear; especially for a one cylinder motor. However, when I slow it...

    6 Hp Chrysler twist grip

I have a 6 Hp Chrysler Model 64H9E which I believe to be a 1980. The twist grip has something broken internally and I've made a number of searches on-line for a diagram of the twist grip. All parts places and other searches have other parts of the engine but none show the twist grip or...

3 HP Evinrude throttle lever moves

Just picked up a decent running 1960 Evinrude 3 hp (for $65). When I pull the recoil the throttle lever moves from position I have it to dead stop. I need the lever to stay where it is.. Any ideas on what to do? thanks

    Chris Craft Challenger recoil

Does anyone know if the original recoil chord (metal center) is available anywhere or if there is an equivalency to substitute? thanks

1980 Johnson 7.5 water pump replacement

Going to replace the water pump in my 80 Johnson 7.5. Probably one of the newer motors I've worked on. I'm used to the shift linkage disconnect in the leg. Do I have to remove the powerhead or is there another way to get at the pump? I notice the pump has a metal replaceable liner; is the...

    1956 10 Johnson shifting problem

I've had this motor for years. Would work on it now and than. Would never stay in forward and probably reverse. As a winter project I would like to complete it. I runs beautifully engine-wise. I swapped out the lower unit with another (not sure of that one's condition but had it laying...

2 HP Johnson dies under load

I have an 85 Johnson 2 hp that will not stay running. I just rebuilt the carb (yes it's getting fuel), has spark, and a new plug. It has 90 psi compression (the rings were replaced). It will run high and idle great when the prop is removed; other than that it runs a bit and dies with the prop...

Lower unit interchange - 10 and 18 Johnson

I have a 55 Johnson 10 and 63 Johnson 18; both with lower unit problems. They both look identical. I also found another lower unit in my shed that's also the same in appearance. Are these units interchangeable? If not how do I determine which motor the 'found' unit could replace? thanks!

56 Johnson 10 - lower unit shift rod

After sitting for many years I finally tackled a QD17 that had shifting problems. I tuned it over the winter and it's up and running. I opened the lower unit and nothing appears broken. This is my first working on a lower unit as I usually find it easier to swap out a complete unit. The...

56 Johnson 10 Parts Availability (lower unit)

I just finished going over (winter project) a 56 10 hp Johnson I've had for over 20 years and never really got it rolling. Right now with carb, ignition and water pump done its running like a clock. However, the lower unit shifting is messed. The reason it sat in the back of the shed for all...

    58 Johnson 10 hp compression

Decided I needed another winter project. I dug the 58 out of the back of the shed; I've had it for so many years I forgot what I checked and did to it. It was given to me and I know I never had it running seriously on a boat and I can't remember if it ran well. I started with the compression...

    Grumman Canoe Identification

Just picked up a Grumman aluminum canoe. Got it for $85; it has some . weld repairs and dents. I was told it doesn't leak. I have a feeling it's a 17' l978 but I'm hoping someone can give me additional (any) or confirmation information on it. The oval sticker in the front says...

63 Johnson 18 hp ignition mystery

Started working on the 18 I picked up recently. It had the original (clear pinkish) coils that were disintegrated. I installed brand new coils and condensers and 'dressed' the points. I cut the ends of the ignition wires (both ends) for fresh connections. I had spark on both cylinders...

63 johnson 18 hp lower unit question

Today I picked up a 63 Johnson 18 ($60). It's all there; no corrosion but it needs coils (original clear pink coils and totally cracked). Does anyone have an idea on what's wrong with the shifting/lower unit. The prop rotates as if its in (forward) gear no matter where the shift lever is...

4 Hp Johnson broken driveshaft ??

I just picked up an 86 Johnson 4 hp with a broken driveshaft (part#0391594). According to the owner he went to put a new water pump in but the driveshaft was stuck at the powerhead end. He tied it to a tree and used his car to pull it out when it would not slide out under normal circumstances...

80 Johnson 7.5 recoil starting to jam

My 80 Johnson 7.5 recoil is starting to become a problem. It's getting harder to pull and when released it makes a ratcheting noise as the rope returns. All in all it's still working but becoming more difficult. I don't see anything broken, it's well cleaned and the parts are lightly lubed...
