Evidently, several problems have been uncovered! First, cleaned up the shift interupter connection to the coil! That eliminated the hard/ stuck shift problem! However, now the engine would die when going from reverse to neutral! Also, could not get rpm’s above 2800. Pulled wires off plugs...
Not saying this caused the problem, I just don’t know, but the end of April, I had a former marine mechanic replace the gimble bearing, bellows and lower shift cable! Supposedly, all oem!
Gets stuck in neutral when the boat is in the water and engine running. Can shift to forward/reverse but gets stuck going back thru neutral. Shut engine off or wait a bit when running and it might release after hearing a snap/pop! When engine off or running on muffs, it shifts as it should...
Ok, been awhile but here’s what’s new! The slip at the outdrive end of the lower shift cable has been eliminated! Let’s call it pilot error! Replaced the water pump and installed the NEW intermediate shift shaft although it didn’t look any different than the old one! Got everything back...
The new shift shaft came in! Comparing the two, I see nothing wrong with the old one! As per the video, the black plastic end moves fore and aft 1/4” or so, but vary little if any movement at the opposite end! Everything on the upper shaft appears as I think it should! I’m going to put it...
The lower shift cable was supposedly replaced along with the bellows in late April! Boat went into the slip in June! My blunder may have been removing the outdrive and forgetting to place the shifter into forward! Don’t know if it bent the intermediate shift shaft as I can’t see any deformity...
Hopefully the video uploaded! Shows the fore and aft movement of the lower shift cable! If this is too much, is it adjustable? What’s the purpose of the threaded end with the allen hole and wire retainer?
Grub, your poor explanation actually makes alotta sense! When I removed the lower shift cable from the upper shift lever, it assumed that crooked 1o’clock position! Was able to level it out ! The problem? Maybe! Will know more when the parts come in by maybe end of the week! One last...
The shifter moves smoothly from neutral to forward to neutral to reverse or any way you want, like it always had! Start the engine and now we have the problem! Not that easy to get in any gear or out of! Eventually, yes, but it will get stuck in f/n/r! Even though the intermediate shift...
I haven’t gotten around to putting the drive back together yet, but soon! However, just curious, but why does the shifter, when the engine isn’t running, shift like butter, but when engine is running, it regularly gets hung up?
Finally got the outdrive out and split it! Removed the intermediate shaft! Looked, looked and looked! Very hard to see bend! Laid it flat with the head facing me, the flipped it and a definite twist appears! I’ve tried to post the pics, don’t know if I’m successful or not! If not, I’ll...
Looking at it, seems that the shoe would/should be the weak link of that articulation! A thin u shaped piece of metal vs a big solid shaft! Can’t wait to look at mine!!!
This has been a headache for several weeks now! Will be pulling the boat out today! I’ll keep you guys posted! A water pump replacement will probably be a good idea also! Thanks !!
Congrats on the retirement! Obviously, difficult to see any bend but not questioning it! So I’m assuming you put the drive back in and had the same issues I am having. Shifts like butter when engine not running??? Took it out on the water today and did more cable adjusting but to no avail...
Ok, now looking at the above pic, the bronze shift shaft (intermediate shift shaft?)would fit over the circled splined shaft, correct? Is that where the bend would occur?
You’ve probably seen a lot of ‘em! I’m starting to think something else could be the problem! Two in 20 yrs. ??? Odds are now, it is something else! I’ll keep you posted!
Ok, that becomes clearer now. So the pic of the bronze shift shaft is upside down then! Which part of the shaft might bend then if the outdrive is taken off without the shifter being forward?
Bit confused! Is this pic upside down? Does it fit in the upper or lower section of the outdrive? As the lower unit comes off in one piece, how does anything in the middle of it get bent if the shifter is not in forward? Please forgive me, but at times, I just have no grasp of the obvious...
