    Troubleshooting stiff throttle

Mercruiser 3.0, alpha one gen 1 outdrive. Throttle on the boat has been very stiff since I bought it. Takes a lot of muscle to get the boat up to speed. I've removed the throttle and upper shift cables and they both slide easy with my hand. Shift linkage on the engine moves easily, and the...

How often to replace points ignition?

Just curious how often folks are replacing the distributor components. I'm going to be summerizing my boat soon, and I read the sticky in this forum and it sounds like the author suggests doing it every year. That seems excessive. I was hoping to just hook up the muffs and fire her up. Did...

Alpha One Stern Drive Trim Fluid Flush/Fill

Can't you just disconnect the lines from the trim cylinders and move the drive up and down to purge the lines and the resivoir?

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

I put a fuel water separator on my 3L last year. I am about to winterize and was going to replace both the separator and the fuel filter, but that made me wonder, does the water separator also filter particulate like the fuel filter does? Would the separator extend the life of the fuel filter...

First start of season, how long for water from impeller?

Nope, I just filled it up with water. Then reattached the intake hose. Then put the muffs on. Then started the engine. I am really primarily interested in how long it should take for water to start flowing from the back of the out drive.

First start of season, how long for water from impeller?

I hooked up my hose to the intake hose on the engine and ran water until it came out of the alpha one. Reconnected intake hose and put muffs on and started up on the first try so yay! But my son who was watching the back of the boat said water came out immediately then stopped.. How long does...

    Fogging oil won't kill engine

I'm in the process of winterizing my 3.0 and when spraying fogging oil down the carb the engine won't die. It struggles a bit but just keeps going. I sprayed for over twenty seconds. Just wondering why and if it matters. I ended up just killing the engine right after spraying.

Is 2000 RPM on muffs okay?

I need to fine tune my new Faria tach and they said I need to turn the POT screw at idle and also at mid throttle. Is there any risk to running the engine on muffs at 2000 RPM for a few minutes? Just need to check RPMs with my digital tach and then adjust the POT screw to match. It's a 1990 3.0L

    Visible exhaust after starting

It starts fine it's just that it kicks out some black smoke so it's too rich apparently

    Visible exhaust after starting

When I turn the ignition on, the choke plate should start opening. So do I just wait longer? Or should I adjust the choke so it's open more from the start?

    Visible exhaust after starting

When I start my 3.0L, I can see visible blackish exhaust for maybe thirty seconds to a minute and then it seems to clear up. What might cause that? Is that normal?

Tach RPM increases when I turn on the ignition

How do I delete my posts? I fixed it, I suspect that the signal wire was touching the batt lead. Now it doesn't behave as described above.

Tach RPM increases when I turn on the ignition

I installed a new Faria tach, the exact model that was in my boat that gives wildly inaccurate readings. Took photos to guarantee I wired up the new one correctly. When I turn on the ignition, before I start the engine, the tach dial begins slowly increasing, and when I turn off the engine it...

    Lubricating throttle/shift cables

The throttle control on my boat is pretty stiff and requires a decent amount of force to push it forward. I've seen a few videos where people force lubricant, either a liquid lube for bike cables, or a graphite lube, into the cable body. Or, should I just replace the cable(s)? Then, is it...

3.0 engine temp never gets over 160 F

I have service manual #13 from Mercruiser. Thanks for the tip.

3.0 engine temp never gets over 160 F

Good question.. I guess prior experience with auto engines. Oddly the service manual for my engine no where states what its operating temperature is.. or if it does I cannot find it.

3.0 engine temp never gets over 160 F

Hmm I thought it should run warmer than that..

3.0 engine temp never gets over 160 F

The design is that it begins to open at 140 and is fully open at 160, if I remember correctly.

3.0 engine temp never gets over 160 F

The dashboard gauge never goes over 160 and most of the time sits around 150 F. Shouldn't the engine run warmer than this? I have tested the temp sender with an ohm meter, and pulled the thermostat and tested that it opens/closes at 140 F. Engine is 1990 3.0L serial number 0D389001 Thoughts?
