Question on tune-up of points ignition & wire/spark plug order

I read through How To: Tune-up Your Points Ingition and the author is very insistent about making sure you do the wires one by one. I am unclear as to why. If I know my engine's firing order, and I know where the rotor is pointing, and cylinder 1 is just before top dead center, I can make sure...

Correct RPM for setting timing on muffs

I'm going to set the timing on my 3.0L using water muffs. It's supposed to be at 8 deg. BTDC but not sure what RPM that's supposed to be at. Manual says idle is 650-700 RPM in forward gear but idle will be higher on muffs, so does that mean I should set timing slightly earlier than 8?

Replaced temperature sender and water ran out

I'm assuming this is entirely normal but I'm really not sure. Boat hasn't run in a couple of weeks. Took the old temperature sender off of the 3.0L engine and water ran out of the hole for a bit. Is that expected?

    Cleaning gas tank?

I'll try to get out there today and poke around and see what I can find and take some photos. Thank you.

    Cleaning gas tank?

I don't know where the sending unit is. I'll see if I can find out.

    Cleaning gas tank?

Thanks, I just installed a fuel water separator. I assume that's what you're referring to. I'll do that thanks.

    Cleaning gas tank?

I have a '91 Larson All American and I'm trying to determine what the fuel tank is made of - is it possible for it to have rust inside of it, and also how to tell if it needs to be cleaned out, and if so how to actually clean it. I can connect a hose to the gas line and siphon out the gas...

Upgrade from prestolite to pertronix or replace dist. with delco voyager

I think in the interest of not spending more money I'm going to stick with points at least until next year - my question for you is about setting dwell. I bought a dwell meter. Can I set dwell and do timing on muffs?

Mercruiser 3.0 140 shakes at idle and bogs on acceleration. New Carb?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread - how would I find the bushings for my old prestolite distributor? It's an IBM 7026 and I can't seem to find parts for it.

Upgrade from prestolite to pertronix or replace dist. with delco voyager

Possibly a dumb question - I have a prestolite points distributor on my 3.0L. I can upgrade it to use pertronix ignitor and replace the coil with a flame thrower, or I can spend about $70 more and replace the entire distributor with a delco voyager unit...

Recommend aftermarket carb for Merc 3.0L

I have not tried rebuilding it. I'm not sure I want to try doing it myself and paying someone is almost as much $ as just buying a new one. My 3.0L is hard to start, needs me to baby the throttle for a while until it will idle by itself without dying, idles rough, rocks side to side, smooths...

Recommend aftermarket carb for Merc 3.0L

I'm looking at either the Sierra 18-7370N, or one from National Carbuertors out of Jacksonville, FL. Wondering if anyone has experience with either, or what you all would recommend.

    Spark plug gap difference

Yes my 3.0 takes too long to start, requires me to nurse throttle for a while before it will idle without dying, and idles rough, shaking side to side. Smooths out if I increase throttle. I'm replacing the points with pertronix and the coil with a flame thrower, new cap and rotor, I installed...

    Spark plug gap difference

This is where I found that I could use the ones I have now https://www.sparkplug-crossreference.com/convert/AC_DELCO/MR43T

    Spark plug gap difference

I had thought about doing iridium. Never used them before, but sounds like they can't be gapped?

    Spark plug gap difference

The cover on the carb flame arrestor has all the information about the engine including spark plugs which it says should be "AC-MR43T". When I went to buy these, the store didn't have them and I don't recall specifically but somehow I landed on the NGK BR6FS plugs as being compatible.

    Spark plug gap difference

The spark plugs I'm using for my 3.0L have a 0.031" gap. The engine specs call for 0.035" gap. Is that tiny difference going to matter?

    Recommend a dwell meter

Wondering what dwell meter you recommend. Reading reviews it seems as though some of the digital ones aren't always consistent.

Setting base timing on Prestolite distributor

Good morning, I want to check/set the timing on my Mercruiser 3.0L. It has the conventional ignition (as opposed to EST). The distributor is Prestolite IBM 7026. The videos I have found on YouTube all show EST distributors and they have a shunt at the base of the distributor where you jump...
