I'm getting 17.5V across my battery.... (Merc 90, circa 1988)

I decided to install a Voltmeter (digital) in my boat. At rest I am reading 13V or so, but in cruise I am getting 17.5V (all throttle settings). This seems way too high to me..... am I cooking my battery? What is the cause? (I know zip about the charging system and how it works) Thanx in advance.

Merc 90 Wiring... where to find?

Folks, while I am diagnosing my other little problem, where can I get a wiring diagram of my motor? I do have two decent manuals already (Seloc and Merc) but they only show ignition wiring and I need to see the alarm wiring.

    Electrical Question (Merc 90)

Ever since I've owned this motor, this has bugged me..... there are two wires which someone has cut. They start at a terminal block on the right side of tthe motor and there are a number of other wires coming off the same point. Also, my overheat and oil level alarms have never worked. Could...

    Merc 90 Cooling Question

Hi Folks: Late '80s Merc 90, oil injected. My water flow starts right from the get-go..... does this mean my thermostat is stuck open, or is this normal? If it isn't normal, typically how long does it take for water to flow from a cold start?

Water Pump Kit Question - (Merc 90)

Hi folks: First time attempting to replace the impeller in my Merc 90. I bought the kit from Quicksilver and watched the various videos on You Tub, etc so I hav a reasonable understanding of what I'm getting into. I understand the two gaskets and the faceplate and the keyway, etc but what are...

General Q about power trim systems....

I have to rebuild (I think) my trim system this winter, since my motor won't stay in the UP position anymore.... takes about 30mins to slowly come down. Anyway, my question is this: why are these systems under full hydraulic pressure when the motor is DOWN? Intuitively (it seems to me) when...

Motor won't stay up....advice needed please.

Brought my motor all the way up yesterday and put the boat on the lift. Noticed after an hour or so the motor was all the way in the down position  I thought it was a senior moment, and I returned the motor to the trailering position and lo and behold this morning she's all the way down...

Where to get a new trim switch?

Hi folks: This weekend my trim switch failed and I could only trim down. It's one of those toggle switches with a neutral OFF position. My control unit is a Quicksilver. Where can I get a new switch? http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss71/VE3CZV/Vanguard/switch.jpg...

    My little 6hp Merc surges

Hi foks: At WOT my little 1964 6hp Merc has begun this surging routine. It idles fine but when I open her up I get a cyclical RPM surging. (sorry I don't know the technical term) What causes this?

    Opinions on handheld marine radios

I am considering the Icom IC M36 or the Uniden MHS550. Anyone have experience with these? Any other models I should consider?

Weight: want to buy a lift but.....

...no clue what my boat and motor weigh. Any guesses?? Will a cantilever lift with a capacity of 2400 lbs be OK? Nearest highway weigh scale is too far away and anyway that would include the trailer, obviously. Vanguard 16' bowrider, Merc 3-cyl 90hp on the back:

    Lower Unit full of 'glue'

Drained my lower unit last weekend and what came out was about an ounce of carpenter's glue -- looked like that, anyway. That's it!! Had filled it earlier this summer with the proper oil..... What gives? Where do I start to look for the problem? (Merc 6hp, ca 1965)

Charging circuit- what should I see...

Just learning the ins and outs of my 1987 90hp 3-cyl Merc. I gather my motor has a simple rectifier circuit which charges the battery? Full wave rectifiers don't exactly put out a steady dc voltage, at least not without a big capacitor, which I don't think I have. (?) So,question: if I were...

    Snipped wires

Anyone know what these two snipped wires might be for on my 1987 90hp 3-cyl merc? (S/N 0B1774...) One is a tan color and the other is black. My alarm system isn't working, and neither is my tach -- don't know if this is related or not.

What are these snipped wires for?

Just getting to know this motor - 90hp Merc 1987 vintage (0B1744...S/N) Noticed these two wires have been cut; they seem to connect to a terminal stud. One is a tan color and the other is either black or very dark blue. Any clues what they're for, or used to be for...

    Q re: tell-tale

Where exactly in the cooling loop is the tell-tale? Is it truly located in such a way that it indicates the motor is receiving water, and that the water is circulating throughtout the motor (90hp 1987 vintage) to cool it? Or is it just an indication that the water pump is pulling water up? I...

    Speedo question...

My first boat (1987 bowrider), so I suppose I'm allowed a few newbie questions..... Although I haven't looked carefully under my instrument panel yet, my understanding is that my speedo is most likely driven by water pressure and fed with a tube. Question: where will I find the 'input' end of...

    Gauges, etc

Just picked up a 1987 vintage Merc 90, and ordered a manual for it. It is connected to this boat: My boat has a speedo and tach only (and the tach doesn't actually work, although when I turn the ignition on, the needle does jump a bit, so I guess there is power there) Anyway, I'd like to add...

    Dilemma - what to do?

This is my first boat purchase (other than my ancient 12', 6hp aluminum). A fellow locally here (Canada) is selling a 1984 vintage bowrider and the boat has seen better days -- has been "rebuilt", new floor, lots of fiberglass re-do, etc. Looks pretty from the outside, but judging by the wiring...
