    88 Johnson 25 won’t rev

is the carb butterfly opening horizontal at full throttle? armatur plate advancing all the way? the high speed needle... behind it everything clean?

How to restore Factory Timing, 1983.

there is an armature stop tab that needs to freely butt up against the rubber high speed stop under the flywheel. these can have really stiff leads over the years, prohibiting it from advancing all the way (and back again when slowing down). check to make sure its smooth and freely moving the...

86 Johnson 50 hp stalls at low throttle

if its stalling, it is indeed most likely the idle stop screw not adjusted for proper rpm in forward gear. I find 700 rpm in forward gear on the water is ideal. stops low speed stalling issues, but still easy on gearcase.

To lap or not to lap?

yes thank you, Racer. I know the function was just asking what is acceptable when staining/rust is concerned. I guess if it's able to stain/rust the taper, it means they weren't lapped together sufficiently to begin with (this motor I rebuilt in 2007.... 1,283 hrs later). stator had the dreaded...

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

Johnson J90TLCNB (1982 Johnson 90 hp with power tilt and trim) Timing Advance Specifications

captain obvious here: did you set the timing pointer correctly with a piston stop tool?

To lap or not to lap?

Flywheel taper on a 93' 225 Johnson. Its hard to tell between rust that matters and just staining. the taper and inside the flywheel are very smooth, but since I take this motor 30+ miles offshore, do you think a lap is in order or not? As long as its clean and dry (i use alchohol as a final...

I found cracks on the top of my motor under the stator

the "intermittent" running at WOT could very well be a sick sensor coil as olboat mentioned. that giant puddle of black goop might be a sign something is amiss... no pun intended. also, looks like that crank taper needs a good clean n' lap before re-assembly!

1983 Suzuki DT-60 Outboard Not Running Well

carbs get dirty with this ethanol even after a couple seasons if its not been run much. sounds like idle circuit needs a look at. only takes 25 min to open carbs up!

    100:1 mix ok in Yamaha 1999 3hp?

100:1 is fine for normal operation, but only if you use it often. never lay it up with only 100:1 film coating the bearings and cylinder walls.

    Johnson 70 3cyl overheating

also possible it's a faulty pack or harness diode causing it to go into SLOW, but i'd verify it's actually overheating at speed.

225 Venom No Serial... What carb kit do I need?

    Johnson 150 Rebuild/Remanufacture Guidance

you are saying the rollers do not touch anything at full throttle? would explain why a couple motors i've built with the caps causing a ridge on both sides haven't failed.

    Johnson 150 Rebuild/Remanufacture Guidance

i hear you... the warnings in the manual always scare me talking about not using the tool. Plus, i can never get all of them lined up to were I'm confident. every time i use the tool, they align perfectly, and it doesnt take me an hour for the job. Clearly, im not patient enough but as I said...

    Johnson 150 Rebuild/Remanufacture Guidance

i used faztbullet's recommendaton and did a light pass with 250 grit or thereabouts on the rod big and little ends with a dremel tool and those poofy abrasive things. made a nice frosty appearance for the rollers to roll and naturally polish it up, i'm thinking. before that, i always left them...

    1998 90HP Evinrude Problems!

check/recirculation lines: there are 6 in total on the intake manifold. just take a look at the schematic on marineengine.com or elsewhere in the manual to see were they go. the 4 on the intake manifold has a tee fitting so they all feed down into 2. basically its this : the fittings on the...

    1998 90HP Evinrude Problems!

i always assemble everything on the bench. just helps me to access all angles. only thing i leave for when powerhead is on the mid is to torque the flywheel. don't worry about the fuel hose lenghts if they are off a little... you can't really screw anything up there. if you send a pic of what...

    1998 90HP Evinrude Problems!

you are just connecting a non VRO fuel pump setup i'm assuming here? Do you have the original fuel manifold assembly>? it's just fuel in from the pump (5/16''), fuel out to manifold (5/16) and the lines to each carb, top and bottom 5/32 i believe. the primer goes out the middle, or if you don't...

    1999 50hp Johnson 2 stroke won’t start

yea or get a new key switch. they are only like $25. it helps to have a remote starter (the real one with the correct plug and key, not a jumper type) to eliminate/isolate the key switch
