The story of two motors - 75 Johnsons

prop shaft... to replace the seals the prop shaft stays in the gearcase. you yank out the carrier and put new seals and an 0-ring in it. when its out, clean the crap out of the inside of the gearcase so as not to damage the fresh 0-ring when reinstalling. i use a dremel and soft wire wheel.two...

    1993 70hp stumped!

J70TLETS. Really strange why it pops with just #1 connected, but RPM wont drop during running drop test with all cyl connected. Nor will it change if fuel is manually introduced. never had this, but could the reeds be stuck closed or maybe water getting into #1? no signs of water on the plug/s...

1995 130 Johnson V4 Shuts down after warming up.

first of all a resistance test tells you only part of the story. you need a cranking (and running) voltage test to see if its putting out the proper power. the charge coil in the stator needs to be feeding the power pack 250v or higher when cranking. 1.5v or higher for the timer base. 190v...

2000 Johnson 250 HP the COVER, Blow-off valve leaking water

the seal goes in with the indents facing UP i'm pretty sure. you can always flip it over and try again... wont hurt anything. i will say you need to be careful that its centered properly with the spring.... easy to get it cockeyed.

    Johnson 70 3cyl overheating

pulling the t stat is not an option i'm afraid. did you pull the tan wire from the PACK and not the temp sensor? the SLOW mode is the tan wire coming from the pack and not the harness... 2 tan wires. the new temp sensors are tan/blue which are the needed upgraded ones. i suspect the t stat...

    1993 70hp stumped!

hi guys. friends motor i'm working on.This motor is a tricky one! It wasnt sparking on all 3 cyl... #2 only very weakly. I tested stator (250v charge coil cranking, ohm test good), timer base (again, voltage and ohm good as per manual with DVA). took off the flywheel and it was rusty.. both...

    Johnson 70 3cyl overheating

SLOW won't kick in at 195 degrees, unless the emissivity value is off on your temp gun. its supposed to be 202 degrees or so... some were slightly higher. the temp reading that matters is at the top of the head at a fast idle, NOT the thermostat housing. just forward of it, the actual head...

    1978 Johnson 70HP head scratcher

eventually you will be forced to take out your DVA adapter to do the proper ignition tests. will save you a ton of frustration in the long run.

    '84 evinrude 6hp E6RCRM

It sounds like it needs a new flywheel ! these are harmonically balanced. if someone hit the nut and mangled it, guaranteed they hit it elsewhere and now its out of spec, rubbing on the armature causing all that mess.

    '84 evinrude 6hp E6RCRM

did they have an issue idling? i ask this because i had one brand new in 96' as my first motor, and no matter how the low speed needle was adjusted, or the idle set screw, it wanted to stall after coming off plane. all the other ones i've done 1980 on up did the same thing. it looks like OMC...

    1978 Johnson 70HP head scratcher

ah well the timer base new is NLA yes, but quite a few new old stock ones on ebay, or just order a new CDI unit. all the same.

    Turning a 1995 50hp triple into 60/70 hp?

the reeds really do make a difference, especially with starting and idle. Some of my motors that have them can tick down to 500 RPM and not stall!

    '84 evinrude 6hp E6RCRM

no problem. just so that it doesnt wiggle much if at all. basically it cannot be flexing/rattling at all as the motor is running. does sound like that goop is stopping current from flowing after it gets warm though. chuck that seloc manual out and get an OEM used one off ebay for a few bucks.

    1986 140 hp Evenrude

you need the factory manual, dva adaptor and a multmeter to read cranking voltage values for the pack, charge coil and timer base. that way you can stop guessing. you can swap coils in the meantime... see if the issue follows them.

    1978 Johnson 70HP head scratcher

reeds , if out of spec or bent, will spit fuel out backwards. you need a DVA adapter for multimeter to figure out if its the timer base, charge coil or pack. do you have the factory manual?

    Need help with 1994 50HP Evinrude E50TLERE

just flip up that warmup lever for fast idle, get it started and settle it down. if the idle is so low it won't stay running or start when warm, you need to turn the idle timing screw in some to put more timing into it! you say it runs rough, but do you mean at a very low rpm?

    gearcase interchange 225 johnson

Looks like the actual gearset is much lower for the V4 looper: 2.25:1 vs 1.86 for the V6. Any issues with the extra v6 torque on the v4 gears? i believe that would make the V4 gears physically larger, so shouldn't be too stressed correct?

1996 Johnson 48 intermittent issues & no power under load

you need a DVA and multimeter. ebay has DVA's that i've tested for $25 and work flawlessly. then just run through the manual for voltage values. only a few things to check (timer base, charge coil and primary terminal cranking voltage from power pack) to isolate what's wrong. one quick thing to...
