    New to me boat ?

I live in Georgia. Title is required for boat and trailer here. Not motor. However in South Carolina, motors require a title also. With a bill of sale signed by the registered owner, I have been able to get a title for several boats. Once you start the paperwork, you should be good. Before...

    No Start

There should be a fuse holder with a fuse in it under the cowling of the motor. It's usually in a black rubber fuse holder. If you have accessories working in the "on" position of the ignition, I'd get a helper and see if you're getting 12v to the starter with the key in the "start" position...

1999 SEI186 Fuel Tank and Fuel Sender

Sending units can be tested with an ohm meter. Once removed, hook the leads from a multimeter (set to ohms) to the two terminals on the sending unit. Some only have one terminal, if that's the case touch the other lead to the housing. Then simply move the float up and down. You should see a...

    Viking/Chrysler 9.6 HP carb?.

I've never seen a carb wear out. I've rarely heard of one breaking. If you find a good price, I'd buy it and a rebuild kit and get to work.

Merc 40 Force - Takes forever to start

I don't think he has a starter problem. As he says, he spins it over for 15 minutes before it starts. And it eventually starts. A bad starter won't spin a motor over for 15 minutes. And if it's spinning too slowly, are you thinking that somehow it gets faster after spinning for 15 minutes...

    1974 Mercury 650 Thunderbolt

Any time I buy a used boat and motor, before I ever take it out on the water I either drain and replace gas, or pump some into a clear container and check for water. I then replace the water pump, spark plugs, foot grease and then test it in the driveway. If it doesn't run perfectly, I rebuild...

    NASCAR in Chicago!

I thought it was a disaster. I'm not a big racing fan, but aren't there enough different kinds of racing where they don't need to try to blend two together?

    Removing steering cable

Put some vice grips on the 3" that has slid out and twist and pull. Brute force is the key, but twisting while you pull will help.

Turn the boat, kill the engine.

I can't see how it would be a fuel problem. I'd be looking at electrical issues or a crimped fuel line. See if it does it hooked up to a hose in the yard. That might help diagnose the issue.

    Trouble coming on plane

I'm not an inboard/outboard sort of guy, but with outboard motors, the manufacturer has a recommended max RPM range where the motor is most "happy". So with outboards, you look for a prop that provides the desired speed you want to reach that is within that RPM range. My boat came with a...

    Won’t start

Absolutely it is possible. Had the same thing happen with an old Evinrude 55 HP outboard. I replaced some part or something and it would run great on the hose, but not in the river. I got really angry at the boat ramp with wife an 3 sons all ready to go out in the boat and it would spin for...

    ‘06 Johnson 90HP Saltwater Won’t Crank

Easiest thing to do is remove the drain plugs and pump the primer bulb a few times until clean/ clear fuel comes out. Shouldn't have to remove the carbs to do that.

Buying used items. What's the worst thing a seller has ever tried to do to you.

I recently bought a small outboard motor for a john boat. The guy said it needed the impeller replaced, but it would run fine, but don't let it run for more than a couple of minutes or it would cause serious damage. Got it home and eventually picked up an impeller and started taking it apart...

I've sprung a leak! Help Please!

It's in the mid 90's here in Savannah, GA. Can't control that. Thanks for the info. Again, first time doing fiberglass repair, but I can't really understand how the first patchwork didn't work. I sanded it pretty well, used 3 layers of progressively larger mat and when finished, I painted...

I've sprung a leak! Help Please!

I have a 2000 Sailfish 198 DC. A couple of years ago, I had a roller fall apart and damage the hull in the bow area. I replaced the roller and patched the "soft spot" or dent that it left in the boat with fiberglass mat and resin. A couple of weeks ago, while sitting on a beach surrounded by...

    2001 Johnson 115 thermostats

Fantastic! That's what I was hoping to hear! I would have helped him out no matter what it would take, but I'm glad It won't be the BEAST of a job that I was expecting. Wish I could find a video, but typing in the year model doesn't seem to help narrow things down.

Where to buy matching paint for my 1999 Sailfish?

Where might I find a website or paint supplier that can provide color matching paint for my boat? I'm just doing some minor repairs of chips/dings/scratches both above ad below water line. It's a white boat, but I know there are approximately a zillion shades of white out there. Thanks in...

    2001 Johnson 115 thermostats

So, my son has an overheating problem on his 2001 Johnson 115. Impeller replaced already, but still has overheating alarm going off. I'm guessing thermostats and or pressure relief valves (Poppets). Before I volunteer to help, I'm wondering if this model has the nightmare thermostat housing...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

next to the carb is a choke solenoid. I'd get a momentary switch (only works when pressed in) and wire it to the battery and the solenoid. I'd do the same with the automatic choke if you want to use that, or just remove it. Also, there's the whole battery charging system. There should be a...
