600-700 RPMs set in gear in the water
Don't be shifting out of water. And be quick with shifting dog clutch drives
Shifting like miss Daisy will just take out the dog clutch and make it rattle. Shifting at 1000 RPM will take out the dog clutches faster
Plenty of people get water in the gear box.

Sometimes it's a prop shaft seal
However the factory service manual has a process for trouble shooting
They don't exist, other than a 4-page safety brochure telling you the pointy end is the bow, and the end with the propeller is dangerous when the motor is running and a list of servicing dealers
The engine service manual will have engine, controls and gauge related wiring.
ABYC wiring codes will allow you to trace the remainder (posted in sticky in electrical forum)
The 4.3 was a production truck/industrial motor made by GM and marinized by Mercruiser with parts available everywhere
The 4.5 is a Mercruiser designed and built motor with parts only available from Mercruiser
Some internal parts are similar
Other than that, they are both V6's
Could be as simple as a deteriorated battery not spinning the motor fas about that the ecm knows you are trying to start it, a bad ground or blown fuse, as moderate as mice damaged wiring or it could be as catastrophic as a bad ecm
Injectors run on a PWM signal by the ecm pulsing the ground...
Seriously doubt the motor or drive will be wearing out. Most gasoline motors will go 5000 hours or more with proper maintenance, diesels will go 20000

on the old GM based motors, I would keep up with 15W40 or 25W40
on the new Mercruiser designed motors they still are calling out for 25W40

the price of the correct carb gasket set is usually less than the cost of a complete correct kit. I have made base gaskets and bowl gaskets in an emergency.
