    The thermostat in a marine motor is used as a mixing valve. There is always water being pumped into the motor , the thermostat may or may not divert a small amount of water thru the motor,, however water is always flowing out the exhaust to keep it cool and from burning up your boat

    unfortunately manuals in the 50's had how-to to adjust ignition and set valve clearances. Todays manuals have to tell the person not to drink battery acid. In Volvo's defense, the average DIYer thinks youtube vids are accurate. I agree that maintenance should be part of the owners manual...
