If your trigger sensor in the distributor has only 2 wires, it may have gone south. The new design of ignition triggers have 3 wires

If you didn't use a factory Mercruiser head gasket, that could also be an issue
just backflush from the raw water pump backwards. simply undo the hose at the raw water pump, shove the end of the garden hose in there and tighten the clamp. no adapter needed.
