since the motors have not changed much from 1991 on, look for a trashed boat with a good motor. I would do a leak down test to determine if its rings or valves or what. could just need a head job however Reserector also has a good point. you may want to try some of the decarboning solutions...

    Buffing the hull

Restoring an old Cruisers Bar Harbor 257

no, they have not updated their site. some of us are still running adobe flash and can still read the site. @Christopher H , my guess that is a mid 70's boat. Cruisers uses a lot of Balsa as core material (they still do). expect a bit of work on the hull

if those numbers are correct, you need a rebuild new compression numbers are 150 psi. 130 psi and the motor is getting tired and will be down on power, 100 psi and it probably wont start

removing the cap is a good idea. if your garage has open trusses, you can ratchet strap the cap to the rafter and raise it out of the way. you can build a cradle between your trailer frame and hull if you need additional support.

    Water in oil

my guess is it wasnt winterized properly. however you need to drain the water jacket and pressure test it. you may get lucky and it may only be a failed oil cooler, or its a cracked engine block, cracked heads and cracked exhaust manifolds from failure to winterize. the water jacket pressure...
