    the type of fuel is not determined by your fuel pump. it is determined if you have had your head serviced and hardened valve seats installed since your engine is a 1974. I would stick to adding the lead substitute, or get a later head.

    start with a carb rebuild. test fuel pressure if fuel pressure is low, look at anti-siphon valve and fuel pickup anything man-made will fail. everything that does not get maintained is problematic. however for the most part, its not the fuel pump.
