    Can I shorten a steering tilt/support tube?

    The steering cable nut that connects to the tilt tube was seized on after using penitrating oil for a while I put heat to the nut and it came loose, but the threads on the end are basically gone. Can I just cut the 3/4-1 inch of threads off and install new cable?

    Ok pin was only around 5/8 of an inch in and I think I over drilled a tiny bit. But its full of fresh marine grease now and still stiff. I pulled the drive unit but the u-joints all move very smoothly. Not sure where else to look.. might just pump in a bit more grease and move it a bunch to see...
