    Did you replace or move distributor/wires? If Chevy V8, bring #1 cylinder to top on compression and check where distributor rotor is point to.

    Pray it is not flywheel ring gear. Does starter require shims? Compare old starter to new one. Vendor may have sold you a different starter.

    You may be able to get professional TIG welder to clean and weld back corrosion. However, if impregnated with salt, I'd replace.

    Scott is mostly correct unless threads are leaking. Most of the time they don't. Sometimes fatigue or dissimilar metals will cause issues. I always use Teflon or liquid Teflon (sparingly). (IF I CANNOT STOP LEAK AND LAST RESORT)

    If not bellows, the fwd drive shaft seal may be allowing spray to get in via hatches.

    May have accumulated crud on flair. Sand or clean with 400 wet or dry sandpaper. Use sealer incase aluminum threads may have become cracked.

    Gimbal bearing. Is this normal?

    Make sure bearing holes line up with grease fitting on transom. Unless your grease fitting doesn't exist on transom. Then you may have incorrect bearing.

    If they are salt used and over 4 years old, pitch them. If not, you should create a piece of flat metal and block off motor side, then pour acetone into the water side and check for leaks.

    It doesn't take much miss adjustment to not have fwd or reverse. Never like Alphas because there is not much room for error.

    AT NIGHT, check for leaking fire on plug wires. You will see it, if there is an issue.
