[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

@flashback , here is a diagram that I used to show the need for spacers to some folks on another forum ( some people . . . ). Essentially, the beveled sides, as built, ended up being a 'tad' too wide for the transom. As such, the extension bracket would find itself off-center...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

No there are (will be) spacers that are thicker than the nuts . . . The transoms of the boat & extension bracket do not come in contact. (the bevel sides interfere with the fit). Thus the hull & deck adhesive putty to fill the gap.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Installation Update . . . I got the extension bracket aligned with the different (0.45") spacers. As such, I drilled the 'pilot' holes and put the 'installation guide pins' in at the 4 corners of the extension bracket. They will need a little bit of play in order to align with the matching...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The center stringer support is done. I do plan on putting in a floor of some sort to make for a decent storage area. The new stringer will play a role in supporting a floor. I did another test fit and decided to go up a 'wee bit' on the spacers. (0.45" up from 0.35"). The thinner ones were...

"set them in place" to keep the cold out. They will be gone once I don't need them.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The sun is shining so I'm doing some more glassing. I did the crossbar pieces over the past couple of days, and today I glassed the center stringer . . . 4 layers wet-on-wet. . . With the sun out, temperatures in the boat are 80˚F, even though it is only 60˚F outside. To keep the coldness...

    Blessed

I took it @ 70. . . a while back I did a calculation of taking it earlier or waiting. There was about a 8-9 year break even point. Thereafter it is a gravy train.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I am glassing today . . . not quite warm enough, but I got a heater going and using 2.25% MEKP . . . seems to be working . . . but it is not quick. :ROFLMAO:

Looks like this is the translation . . . I’ve switched to a Thunderbolt LV electronic distributor… it won’t start… it’s only sputtered once.”

You wouldn't have tooling resin in a production piece. That (red) is the fiberglass (resin). Not sure what it is, but probably a VE resin. The VE resin I used on the extension bracket is more green in hue.

Day 3 (or 4) of grinding . . . . . A few more areas to do, but it is getting close.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I am out of 40 grit disks, which was fine for today, as I can only do so much grinding in a day. . . I'll be getting more 40 grit, because the underside of the swim deck needs some grinding . . . not the hole area, but where I want the contact points.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I'll just do the best I can on the inside. The outside (where it really counts) is going well though . . . . . I bought 20 flap disks (40 grit), and there are not many left. I've got some 60, 80, and 120 grit as well, but 40 grit is for the grinding.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The wire cup wheel was a bust . . . it just can't get into the groves to any extent. Since it is cold(er) and damp this AM, I started the grinding on the outside on the transom. Much better and goes fairly quick with the 'corded' angle grinder. :D . . The gelcoat on this boat is fairly thick...

Since I'll be scarf joining and gelcoating, I chose to stay away from epoxy.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I'll try that . . . The main stringer is nothing but corduroy . . . :cautious: I did go back (just now) and hit some of the low spots. This is what I'm trying deal with . . . Plenty thick on the outside, not so much on the inside. . . I did not want to grind too much more. There is some...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I got my bolts, so the fastener portion of my installation is ready. I have been planning the adhesive aspect, being the hull & deck putty. I consulted with our good friend (Jody) on the compatibility of VE resin and polyester resin. He stated that they are 100% compatible. So, my plan is to...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I am finding the surfaces are quite un-even, and the top surface of the transom and stringers is 1808 fiberglass, which has the texture like those corduroy pants from 50 years ago. The gel goes down into the crevasses :cautious: So I was concerned about grinding some areas too much, as there...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I made the mistake of touching an area of the fiberglass that had been ground . . . ouch . . . microscopic fibers in my finger  I used the Hull & Deck putty to set these pieces of the transom support structure in place. . . OMG !!! . . . It's warm enough outside to have the...
