[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I hit 10.0 hours, so the break-in cycle is done. First maintenance interval is at 20 hours

I figure that I can do 1-2 bolts holes up before calling Bob @ the machine shop 😀

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Windy day today, but Tuesday and Wednesday look OK for some additional testing of engine trim & height. I hope to get my camera thingy adjusted better. Reading up on the spec's, it looks like the Honda BF350 has a trim range from -4˚ to +15˚ (so 19˚ of trim). The spec for transom angle is...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The engine height looks low . . . The video is running at 4000 RPM, 35 mph. About as fast as I could go with the conditions.

After paying $6+ for gasoline, I am getting a fuel transfer pump. The Admiral buys our groceries at a local chain store that also has gas stations. You get fuel discounts for buying groceries. She typically gets between $1.00 and $1.50 off per gallon / 20 gallon limit. Much of the gasoline...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Overall, the boat is awesome . . . it comes up on plane easily and runs nice and flat. Being able to tilt the engines up out of the water at the end of the day is a real treat. :D If we take the boat out tomorrow I should be able to get some video of the ventilation plates. (y)

I was getting 1.25 mpg with the Mercruisers, but outboards may not get as good fuel usage.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

A little more choppy on the way back . . . but I ran the boat at 4000 RPM 35 mph. . . The display was saying 1.0 mpg, which may be suspect, because it does not seem to be using that much fuel. I know there has been some Internet chatter about Honda not calculating fuel usage...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

    I have 75 gallons,(half a tank) after adding the 30 gallons. I think I’ve burned 30 gallons in 7.5 hours of mixed speeds. (4 gallons/hour)

Wind is pretty calm I did a quick run; got 50 mph @5300 RPM trimming up to 80%. $6.12/gallon for gas ⛽️. 🤮 I’ll try some more running on the way back from the anchoring spot (Bassett Island) 🍺

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Heading out to the boat this AM for some more running & data recording. Hopefully the info will determine next steps in tuning. Mike indicated that 5,000 RPM is the minimum and they shoot for 5,500 . . . 6,000 being the maximum. Plan for the day . . . depending on sea conditions.. . . 1)...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Yes, I was going to pull those numbers. The boats they tested back then had the V-P engines, but pretty much the same. One thing the re-power guy (Mike) mentioned is that bottom paint will take a few mph off vs. a new/clean hull. With my Mercruisers, I also painted the propellers, so that may...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I'm not sure I ever recorded numbers for my Sterndrive configuration, except the top speed was 45 mph @ 5000 RPM (+/-)

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Since the Mercury engines from the factory were spinning 16x18 props, that might be the right number.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

You guys ask a lot of questions . . . some are above my pay grade and it may be a matter of trying things and see what works. My main concern is that the engine be properly loaded so as not to have adverse long-tern effects. 18 mph is the 'hump' speed and I can feel the bow come down once I...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Mike said it would raise the WOT RPM, but the speed may be about the same. I'll know in a few days, BUT . . . the lower units might be too deep. I plan on getting some video of the ventilation plates soon. The vent-plates are about 1" above the planing surface, but it may need more. It may...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Yes, my boat planes out at about 18 mph . . . the 'stock' 338 OB has to get up around 23 mph.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Here is an interesting chart. I compared the speed vs RPM of the 'standard' CY338 Outboard (Bracket) with my boat CY338 with extension bracket . . . I used the data from BoatTest done back in 2019 when the OB version first came out. The stock OB had 350 HP Verado engines w/16x18 props. My...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Here are a few pics of the engine bay now that the outboard rigging has been installed. I recall asking briefly about fuel filters, but didn't think much of it. Well there they are (y):D . . The white unit next to the battery box (above) is the dry bilge pump. It's job is to get the...
