[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I’m up to 6 hours on the meters. So, almost through the break-in routine. I got myself a remote camera, so I can get a look at the vent-plates while at speed. Just wondering if the props are too deep.

Seaways is the auto-pilot function. The re-power shop that I went with seemed to be particularly good with all the techy stuff.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I installed a depth transducer and a SeaFlo dry bilge system yesterday before taking the 'gang' (18 people) out to the local sandbar. The extra buoyancy of the extension-bracket came in handy. Even with that many people, the boat does not feel overly crowded.

Yes, joystick docking has been around for a while. Each engine has its own steering actuator and 'the computer' figures out steering position and engine RPM for each engine, based on joystick position.. The movement that it lets you do that conventional twin engine steering does not is the...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I'll be getting a water-proof camera system today to hopefully get some images of the LU/ventilation plate area while on plane. Lots of boats out at the local sandbar (Jetty) yesterday. I am enjoying getting the boat into skinny water (on a rising tide  ), and the good amount of space at...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

It's been so long, that I can't remember. j/k :ROFLMAO: . . . But all the cool kids have outboards now. Salt water friendly Easier maintenance (maybe) Add planing surface (time-2-plane, cruising speed) Keep the boat and its features. . . (Great layout, keep all my modifications, etc.)

It was about 1-1/2" in total. A balance between 1" per 12" and what made sense from a mounting perspective.

The engines can be moved up a 'bolt-hole' on the clamp mounts . . . not the easiest thing to do though.

Mike [Preservati], (Preservati Marine LLC), most likely will be going for ride when he comes out to do the tuning. He used to be at Millway Marine in Hyannis, and went out on his own in the past few years. They deal with most outboard engine brands, but are a licensed dealer for Honda Marine...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Quick Update. . . The re-power guy (Mike) said to re-run the speed test with greater amounts of trim. Additionally, he asked if I could get a visual of the lower units at speed to see where the ventilation plates are relative to the water stream. I have a camera set-up for my trailering...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Here is my chart of the speed run yesterday. The Naval Architect had estimated the 'hump speed' of 18 mph (coming on plane) of the hull in its new form using Orca software and the 3D model of the hull. Looks like it was spot on, based on my testing of time-to-plane and planing speed. .

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I ran the boat up to WOT on a couple of occasions today . . . I probably have not trimmed up enough, as I was only getting 5100 RPM and 48 mph. Time to plane is about 3 seconds (great improvement) and only needs about 3,000 RPM to come up on plane I sent some performance data off to the...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The boat is about the same weight as before, because the engines and bracket are heavier than originally planned. Top speed as a sterndrive boat was 45 mph. I'm thinking it will be 8 mph faster with the extended hull and outboards.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Now that this project is winding down, I took a look at the overall cost of the conversion project, for the benefit of anyone else crazy enough to consider such. . . Of course, without the Honda instant savings promotion, the cost would have been $20K more.

No. . . , but it is now heading to the top of the list.

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I should be able to 'test' the boat at higher speeds tomorrw, even up to WOT. I'm thinking somewhere in the 52-54 MPH range. What say y'all?

    Lost my mooring

Speaking of moorings . . . I just got notice from the Harbor Master that a mooring is available for my sailboat  . Well you don't have to ask me twice. I just came back from the harbor master's office having dropped off the acceptance paperwork. (y) I waited 10 years for the mooring...
