1985 Bayliner 2750 Ciera Sunbridge Resto

Well, the motor crapped out on me. Cylinders 4 & 6 were a little low to begin with, and 3 & 5 were a hair low too. The motor began to fall flat and died for good Saturday with no obvious signs of overheating, but I had to run it hard for an hour to keep on plane in a following sea after...

Volvo AQ 260A lost compression, water in valve cover

Oil in the bottom of the pan looks dirty, but no moisture. The white in the container is dried paint.

Volvo AQ 260A lost compression, water in valve cover

The acting fast part is where I likely already screwed up; this happened Saturday. I'll still change the oil tonight since I have the oil on hand

Volvo AQ 260A lost compression, water in valve cover

Sounds like a plan, and thanks for the advice. I ordered the oil pump primer tool, should be here tomorrow. This is my first time going past the valves in any engine, so sorry for any dumb questions. So hypothetically, I'm trying to put together costs on fixing what I have versus getting a...

Volvo AQ 260A lost compression, water in valve cover

Good point, I'm just in denial I guess. This was saltwater, so I'm guessing the bearings/internals are likely toast by now?

Volvo AQ 260A lost compression, water in valve cover

@alldodge I did not see any milky oil right after the engine shut off, is it possible that little water made it into the crankcase? I'll drain and change the oil this afternoon to get a better look. The cylinders and pistons made me hopeful that the block may be still good, but I'll defer to...

Volvo AQ 260A lost compression, water in valve cover

I cleaned it up some before taking a pic, but there was milky oil under the intake manifold. The manifold itself doesn't have any cracks or holes that I see: There was lots of carbon buildup by the middle cylinders of both sides. Here is what it looked like under the heads 1, 3, 5, 7...

Nothing came out of the cylinders while checking compression

Volvo AQ 260A lost compression, water in valve cover

My 1985 Volvo Penta 260A with new risers was seemingly running well for a few hours after sitting for 10+ years. I was making about 4600 rpm WOT, cold started easily, but seemed to be vapor locking after warming up (140 thermostat). After a one hour hard run in a following sea, the motor fell...

1985 Bayliner 2750 Ciera Sunbridge Resto

I spent a few days wet sanding and compounding the topsides. It will need a little more compounding annually for a while, but looks fairly glossy now (pics coming). Next, I had some scrap sheets of 304 stainless lying around, and enlarged my trim tabs to 18"×12". I was able to stay on plane...

    Garmin Striker shutting down

Use a multimeter to follow your voltage to the MFD. You likely have a bad connection(s) somewhere.

22' Sylvan Audio Upgrade - Subwoofer Backing Support Needed?

I think the vibration/rattling of the sub will be the issue you'd have.

Haha, I hope she listens. Have you been able to use your boat much since fixing it?

I forgot to add that the trolling motor pushes this around great, 5 mph in calm water. The real test will be with an offshore current.

1985 Bayliner 2750 Ciera Sunbridge Resto

The spare prop that came with this boat is a 15×17 RH Michigan long hub prop (elephant ears), which I kept as a spare. In order to make this work, I had to cut down the old line cutter/spacer a quarter inch, and used a thick 5/8" washer with a slightly cut down 5/8" nylock nut. As long as I...

1985 Bayliner 2750 Ciera Sunbridge Resto

I have a cooler full on non-alcoholic beer on board, still love the taste. And yessir enough snacks to camp out on here a few days. I haven't boated nearly enough this year, it'll be nice to be on the water for a bit. The motor actually runs great, no tinkering necessary. It is definitely a...
