    78 Mercury 700 - Waterpump Base Removal

That makes sense. I'll start with these easily accessible ones, and then do a vacuum and pressure test.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

I've seen several posts that this motor has issues with overheating. I was just asking if there was a "fix" to prevent that.

    78 Mercury 700 - Waterpump Base Removal

Yes, mine had a gasket also. Using a couple flat head screwdrivers with more force got it. Thanks! . I'm leaning towards just doing all the seals, o-rings, and gaskets for the lower unit now. I'm in this far; might as well...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

It's tough because less and less know what they are talking about. And oddly, unlike you and others here, many talk in absolutes - spouting like they know what they are talking about. I can't figure why moderated forums are losing popularity and Facebook Iz Da Place.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

I read somewhere that this 700 only used poppet valves, but I've gotten much more conflicting information on this motor doing research than any of the other motors I've had. I've only owned a 84 Mercury 7.5, a 2010 Yamaha 9.9, a 1984 Suzuki dt75, and the recent 1994 Johnson 90hp.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Is there a fix for the possible overheat issue? . I'm thinking for the undersized lower unit to just not oversize the prop and to not floor it - just let it get up to speed gradually. This will just be a casual fishing boat and motor.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

I'm thinking the Stator and Trigger were original. The wires just crumbled away as I removed them. I didn't want to risk it. I bought a new Sierra Stator and Trigger. They should be here Saturday. I'm building a new Wiring Harness. I stripped the motor down then degreased cleaned the motor. I'm...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

I've been digging into this and cleaning things up. As mentioned earlier, it has good compression - 130+/- at each cylinder. Mechanically it's looking good, and cosmetically it is nice also. Sometimes you have to determine at what point is the teeter point between it's too old to be worth it and...

1978 Mercury 70hp Adding Power Tilt Trim

Google Ai tells me the 1978 Mercury 70hp didn't have a Power Trim option. But I'm reading that it came on later models. . Does anyone know if there are newer models that have Power Tilt Trim that can be modified to work with a 1978? I know I can buy a CMC, but I was wondering if there are power...

    Ignition Troubleshooting - 1978 700

My shopping for a new one I'm noticing they all have BLK/YEL where mine has ORN for Orange. . Mine might likely be a pretty old one. . Mercury switched from the solid orange (or salmon) kill/stop wire to the standard industry black/yellow stripe wire around 1978–1979, coinciding with the...
