Entire electrical system dies when under way

Cancer. My turn in the barrel.

I don't know you. But, yeah, just not fair to us non - smokers, drinkers, druggers. All we can do is fight it.

an almost stepson needs some advice

thanks... and I said 60 hp, but it's a 40. Regardless, I'm just gathering basic parts costs and labor costs. Gotta call and see about the labor costs. Anything beyond seals, bearings, washers will just be mentioned as a warning for additional problems.

ok....thanks for the time frame .....the movement is at the top only, it's minor but not right. bearings, seals, washers seem a available. Don't know if the steering rod is needed. Since I do my own work, I don't know the local market labor rate.

Entire electrical system dies when under way

+1 on corrosion somewhere. I had a similar issue a year or so ago. It turned out to be a corrosion issue in the battery feed (wasn't the connections) to the ignition switch. Drove me nuts as it was intermittent and never totally shut off my motor but it would stumble. I discovered it when moving...

an almost stepson needs some advice

that's what I'd heard. So that's not gonna happen, at least from my end. But, as a last resort....anyone here able to give a rough estimate cost wise from a shop? This is not a salt water exposed motor.

thanks, but the main question is how ...would you replace that carbon steel rod. How do you replace the bearings, seals, and washers. What's involved?

It's this diagram that you posted, not the transom. That's where the issue is. Specifically #'s 2, 3, 20. Don't need correct parts yet. I need to confirm what is involved in replacing those parts. I hear it involves ......a lot.

top of swivel base, yep. #2, #3, #20....that area. Which would be located at the top of #9 and #1. If I pull back and forth on the on the prop/gearcase, that moves back and forth also..so gotta be that bearing/seal/washer assembly. Not complicated, but what's involved in getting that apart to...

an almost stepson needs some advice

sorry...guess I didn't see the "non". And stated it was a late 90's Merc. 60hp 2 stroke....1996, I believe. Figured that mount is similar for a broad range of Mercs. And I did pin it. He can run it as is I said, for now...but I don't know one thing about that bearing/pivot point......so I...

an almost stepson needs some advice

So this is a late 90's Merc 60 hp 2 stroke. I've got it running great. Two issues. Tilt/trim is inop, but I believe I can replace the total assembly, runs around $500-$700 . The big issue is what appears to be a bearing that is loose/bad at the top of what I call that center pivoting motor...

Starting engines with jump box & dead house batteries

I've always been taught, read, (various sources over 51 years) and believe that a battery acts as a surge buffer to any transient voltage spikes. Since an electrical system is designed to operate within the alternator's charging range, no system should be damaged. I've also understood over...

    K&N air filters......yay or nay ?

It's an ok filter, it's just that people over oiled it or oiled the wrong side and then blamed it when the MAF failed. And if you don't have a MAF, no worries at all.

What's the word on the street about current Mercury models?

I had an original equipment '05 Merc. 60 hp Big Foot (CT) 4cyl, efi on my used pontoon purchase in 2016/17. Kept it up to july of 2021. I found oil/filter, fuel filter changes easy. Also impeller, plugs, and a belt were normal effort. Replaced it with a new 2021 115 hp CT in July 2021. Plugs...

    Servicing my trailer bearings

kinda hard to follow you. You bled the brakes before you cleaned out the master cylinder?...but now you want to blow out lines/calipers? If it was mine: I would have cleaned out the master cylinder by removing the fluid (I use a baster), then wipe it out with shop towels, filled it with fresh...

    K&N air filters......yay or nay ?

part of the problem was oiling the wrong side. Then too much. Cost vs alleged performance gain. Project Farms did air filter tests. So I use Purolator . Took the K&N out of the Camaro years ago.
