    1978 Islander 22 I/O

@Watermann you're basically iboats royalty. It would be an absolute honor! Dry-fitting some fittings and adding some finishing touches to my battery wells. I put some of my flooring in the battery holders protect from chaffing, add some cushion, and I thought it looks nice and happened to have...

    1978 Islander 22 I/O

A few finishing touches in the cabin. I used gray tractor paint on the bulkheads. I like the way that machine paint goes on. It feels like it's adhering well and going to last. This being a fishing boat, this cabin is purely utility, storage, port-a-potty, etc.

Installing some new skin on the gunnels. I reinforced the rear with coosa where I plan to mount fishing gear, downriggers, etc. I took the rub rail off, addressed any loose or missing rivets, sanded loose paint & debris, cleaned everything up with acetone caulked around all the holes on the...

It seems like the seats are usually one of the first things to give, either from rotted wood or inadequate hardware... It's not something I want to deal with happening, so I'm slapping Grade 8 in it and calling it a day!

I've been working on my seat platform for the past two weeks, as weather permitted. It's 1-1/2" Douglas Fir, Marine Ply that I bought as a sheet with that thickness from a shop. It'll provide a competent surface to mount my seats to. I have grade 8 hardware and I plan to through bolt my...

I added edge trim to finish my interior bench piece. I couldn't find trim the exact size I needed... This is 1/2" and my piece is 1/2" coosa with two layers of vinyl flooring. Nonetheless, it seems to be holding just fine and serves its purpose.

Check out what I found for $80 and some driving. It needs new fittings and I'm going to look into having the railing anodized.

More floatation foam work, I formed my rubber storage pails in the foam like I did my port-a-potty. The expanding floatation foam is very solid stuff. It can handle structural applications like this. You can see my sheet vinyl as before. I am not letting the foam form directly to the hull of the...

Floatation foam When I did the demo on the boat I kept a huge hunk, about 2 cubic feet of styrofoam. I cut that up and incorporated it into my pour in expanding foam. I think it's cool when some of the original parts and materials can be put back to good use. The last few pictures are of my...

Exactly! I'm thinking about long-term care, ease of cleaning and replacing. The idea with the garage flooring is for it to be a disposable option. I'm not gluing it in. When it is junk, take up the deck fittings cut a new piece and put it down. There's nothing to rot under the flooring. It's...

Building the lower deck I used aluminum slats for support, and I had enough 3/4" Coosa leftover to piece in. For the flooring I'm using Big Box Brand garage flooring. My idea for using the garage flooring is ease of cleaning and replacement down the road. I'm not even gluing it in. The idea is...

Vinyl on the forward cabin bench. I guess they discontinued making Nautolex's glue. The Weldwood seems to be working fine.

This boat is my first attempt ever at doing boat interior.

The cabin window doesn't fit great. It's something I'll have to revisit later.

    1978 Islander 22 I/O

I rough sanded, cleaned, and primed the cabin bulkheads. I used tractor paint on my other boat, and it worked out well, so I decided to go with oil-based machine paint again. It goes on nice and sticky, feels like it's getting a good bond. I wiped it down with acetone before I painted and...

yeah, they cut the plexiglass a little small in one area. Overall, I don't really care for how it's all fitting together, but looking at the original work, the way it came from the factory, this was always going to be an uphill battle. I'm going to use butyl tape and caulk and try to cheat my...

Cleaning up the front cabin window frame, getting ready for the reinstall. I'd be lying if I said I was happy with it... The plexiglass is cut less than perfect. They didn't have much to go off. I think I can make it work though.

The last thing I did before I closed it up for the winter, was to a add framing under the decking where my batteries will be located, run the fuel fill & ventilation lines and I found another chance to stuff some more floatation board in, so I took advantage. I have the board on-hand, plus I...

Doghouse Build With the winter coming I wanted to get the doghouse built to have an added layer of protection for the engine during the winter months. In the past I had it shrink-wrapped because there was no protection for the engine. This year I went with my store-bought cover, the doghouse...
