    What size trailer winch?

Right... that's what I'm concerned with. How strong is that connection?

    What size trailer winch?

I have a 1989 Bayliner Trophy 2459 that weights about 4000lbs. My cable trailer winch just snapped and looking at replacements they only go up to 3000lbs. Is that sufficient to pull it up on the trailer? Is not lifting it vertically... so not sure how these are rated. Also how strong is the...

1989 OMC 5.8L Stern Drive, Rough Starts

Idle screws were set to the same setting they were at prior to the rebuild, have not been checked while running the engine, Ill check that out and see if I can get a better idle, but it idles fine once warm. The ESA seems to function in that the motor "stumbles" when going into reverse. Is...

1989 OMC 5.8L Stern Drive, Rough Starts

I am not sure if it has points ignition... So that has not been checked. Ill read into that process. I don't believe the ESA is the issue with starting, just shifting, correct? Choke appears fine, only by visible checking its position while cold and warm. Not sure about the idle fuel mixture...

1989 OMC 5.8L Stern Drive, Rough Starts

Just fixed my shifting issue and now I noticed that the engine seems to crank a bit too long before starting and dies going into gear at first, before warmed up for a bit. I would like to troubleshoot this, what should I be checking? My guess is a distributor/ignition issue as I checked all gas...

    1989 Trophy, Adding 2nd Battery

So I tapped the deep cycle battery into the red/purple line near the starter solenoid and disconnected it from the exiting path and it seems to have worked and doing what I want. I just need to do some more verification to make sure there are no other crossovers from one battery to the other...

    1989 Trophy, Adding 2nd Battery

Understood, it will be on a maintainer when not in use, just would like to have the alternator charging as well while in use.

    1989 Trophy, Adding 2nd Battery

Ah, I see what you're saying. Even if I disconnect the red/purple 12v supply at the engine, there is the scenario where the bilge switch is on and the float valve is activated that it would backfeed from one battery to the other and be way to much amperage for that wire... probably just...

    1989 Trophy, Adding 2nd Battery

Yeah I see those connections, but I want to interrupt the 12v supply from the red main line from the engine to the fuse box. I think those ones run separately on their own.

    1989 Trophy, Adding 2nd Battery

Just like to have both charge off the alternator. The load of the equipment is low (10 gauge, from the diagram I see) but the battery to battery connecting is high load, made sense to keep the batteries close together to minimize that length of high amp cable. Also they will both charge with...

    1989 Trophy, Adding 2nd Battery

I am trying to add a second battery to my 1989 Bayliner Trophy 2459 and I'm trying to figure the best way to wire it up. Currently I have a starting battery and a deep cycle battery. I would like the starting battery to only be hooked up to engine (alternator, starter, coil, etc...) and the...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

So I found the problem... surprised the boat worked at all. Metal piece had separated in the outdrive. New Sierra cable is installed. Passed the clunk test. We will see how it does in the water.

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

This is what happened to mine it seems like. When I pulled the outdrive off it had water deposits in there. I cleaned it all up, greased it a ton and it moved very freely now. My guess is the cable got stretched over time and it not able to move both directions the required 3" to move from...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

That's actually the shift cable I ordered. Not $200+ OEM and not $30 garbage. That company makes a lot of aftermarket boat parts (fuel filters are that also I think...)

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

I tried this and it checked out.... but I think I need to be on the prop side... not the shifter side to really feel it. I plan to replace the shifter cable, just need to locate a decent one. I have seen a few lying around the boat... makes me think the previous owner had purchased bad ones...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

Is there anyway to know what length the cable is before I pull it out? Would like to get the new cable ordered, but I cant get to the boat for another week.

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

If it comes to this, where is the best place to get replacement cables? There are 100s on Amazon that are cheap... but I would like to get better ones.

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

So #1 I set to the required height (top of shift rod to top of lower casing, I think 7.21" if I remember correctly. #2 I used the tools to set it to required position in the transom and on the engine. I think #3 is where I need to focus now. I guess it just surprised me that it could be set...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

The cables all move freely, checked that when I had the outdrive off. They still move freely with everything on and connected. Just not engaging forward gears.
