2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

different manifolds, different manufacturers, but the common element is the same cylinder head, correct? I know we discussed this but you did put a mechanic's straightedge across the exhaust ports, they all line up correct? What about the threads in the cylinder head for the manifold bolts...

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

5 min is a very long time without water, I'd change it for sure. If these fit your motor, I am a big fan of them, I find them to work better than the fancy dual inlet ones. Those can have cups that are made of thicker rubber that's too stiff. The Merc/Quicksilver ones are made of thinner more...

Starting your car in this cold weather.

We also used to do this with stick shift cars when all there was for lube was heavy 90 wt gear oil…. Start engine put gearshift in neutral with clutch engaged (pedal up) this spins the main shaft in the trans to at least slightly heat the oil in the trans to get it to flow better. I had a 1982...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

that, and what you see people trying to get (20-30K) for junk used boats. I have no problem with repowering this boat, due to the fact that it's far cheaper than buying anything GOOD. I could even rationalize converting it over to Mercruiser when it needs a re-power, the parts (used) just...

Starting your car in this cold weather.

I learned to drive in 1971/72 the only car I saw back then was the 1st run of the Honda Civic. Even my 1965 VW 1200 40 hp had an electric auto choke. What made many vehicles lousy cold starters was the then new EPA regs forcing automakers to set carbs too lean and chokes to open too fast.

Conversion from I/O to outboard on Islander.

If you’re in freshwater even though I have at times cursed the work that I/Os require (salt water use and moorage) I would not get involved in a project like this. With an I/O the 2 options that would make maintenance easier to deal with are a remote oil filter mount & closed cooling. The main...

I have a question on a volvo penta 7.4 engine

I would do 2 tests: pressure test with HE installed, you can have leaks from other places, hoses, front water pump, core plugs, etc combustion gas test, to see if combustion gas is getting into the AF. even though the HGs were replaced, unless the cyl head bolt holes were carefully cleaned out...

I have a question on a volvo penta 7.4 engine

agreed you need to do a cooling system pressure test and also make sure that combustion gas isn't getting into the antifreeze, this can over-pressurize the system and cause it to lose antifreeze. Cause is usually a leaky head gasket hope it's not that in your case. in addition to testing the...

How often do you change your bellows and shift seal?

I have had bellows last as long as 10 years even on a boat moored in salt water. I do carefully inspect it when the drive is pulled each season and will replace it as soon as I see any signs of cracks in the rubber between the folds. That strategy has helped me avoid expensive repairs. Think of...

    mercruiser 4.3 thermostat housing

When I did that job, the main thing I recall was trying to keep everything lined up. So some Permatex Aviation sealer on the water port part of the cyl head will hold the gaskets in place while you carefully lower the manifold in place, then hand thread in the 12 bolts and torque to spec. If you...
